These photos were taken in the vicinity of RAAF Amberley, Qld circa 1974-76. Unfortunately there isn't enough resolution in the original prints to make out an identity of either aeroplane. I'm hoping a former Bristol driver might remember the event. The photos were taken from another F-111. Note the disparate attitudes of the two aircraft!

Different attitudes yes, but the Freighter is still out in front... winning the race as it were

I just love that they are both in variations of the same colour scheme.

Very cool photos Ron. How to make your Bristol Freighter flight even louder on the ears!

Thank Christ I didn't have my house in Willowbank back then all else I'll be deaf with all that bloody noise from a B-170 going flat out and the F1-11 about to fall out of the sky.

Perhaps the Freighter had some precious cargo on board or a dignitry?
Lovely photos, a great scene - creating some good interest.

I was just thinking about watching the Americas cup and at times they showed the wash from the big wing going into the path of the following boat. I was thinking that the pig was getting slowed by lots of "rivet wash"

It did look like the Freighter was going "downhill" but thanks for the details and story! Sent from my GT-I9300T using proboards

Sadly NZ5902 is no longer with us having been broken up in 1988 and of course the F-111 has been retired but wonder if this F-111 is preserved?

Freighter5910 Many thanks for that definitive response. I wasn't expecting such a spectacular result. Sadly A8-136 crashed at Guyra, NSW on 28APR77 but the crew escaped and the module is now at the RAAF Museum, Point Cook. A8-140 was buried with 22 other F-111s in November 2011 but the crew module survives at the Aviation Heritage Museum, Perth, WA. A full list of the F-111 disposals is here: F-111 DisposalsI too would like to see other photos of the formation. Regards Ron

What a story, a Bristol at 205. I bet that cost a few ales in the mess. I did air experience in a Freighter from Whenuapai and even at takeoff speed the noise and rattling was impressive.
