I just read an article on Google News stating that there's a "controversy" broken out over the latest Air New Zealand safety video, with feminist groups and "celebrities" like Pam Corkery and Hilary Barry calling for Air New Zealand to ditch it. They claim it is sexist and demeaning to women because of the scantily clad swimsuit models in the video.
Curious about this I looked it up on Youtube. I cannot see what they are so het up about. Yes, there are some swimsuit models from Sports illustrated - there promoting their magazine's 50th Anniversary - presenting the video. They do a very good job at presenting it with clear messages and good presentation, and frankly they are no more scantily clad than the native girls - and much more clad than the native boys - in the video. And furthermore they're also no less clad than many women you see daily in TV dramas and reality shows, and in real life, all the time.
The major point of the video is to promote safety, and like all the recent Air New Zealand videos, they do that well whilst incorporating a specific theme. The theme of this one is promoting the Cook Islands to the world with a sub-theme of also promoting the Swimsuit Edition of Sports illustrated magazine. What better way to do that than have beautiful women in bikinis on the beach?
I am pretty sure the Cook Islands has always used this sort of theme to promote themselves to the world - beautiful people on their beautiful beaches - and I've never seen the feminists getting all foamed at the mouth about it before.
I think the critics need to wind their heads in, get over their jealousies and personal inadequacies, and simply accept that this is an effective campaign that catches the attention with stunning scenery to promote safety, Sports Illustrated and the Cook Islands.
See for yourself, what do you think?

I was so offended by it I had to enter the competition. I had to go back and see it again cause I'd forgotten how many blokes were in the canoe, canoedling along the beach

I'm offended by Pam Corkery every time she opens her expletive laden mouth. And as for Hillary Barry, if she wasn't blond and pretty she'd be packing bags at Countdown, she certainly isn't a journalist. The few minutes I struggle to endure with her in her Radiolive chit-chat with Marcus Lush in the morning is just her regurgitating twitter and youtube posts. There's only air in that head

I too am offended - I was not invited to take part.
Congratulations to ANZ on their innovative safety videos, much more likely to be watched than the boring old ones.
Pam Corkery is a very opinionated commentator and if she does not agree, then it should be banned/outlawed or otherwise not allowed.

I question the need to use imported talent. Lots of very nice looking . . . people . . .in NZ who could have been used in the roles. I'm offended by Pam Corkery every time she opens her expletive laden mouth. The few minutes I struggle to endure with her in her Radiolive chit-chat with Marcus Lush in the morning is just her regurgitating twitter and youtube posts. There's only air in that head The answer to the presence all of these annoying and irrelevant people is to just turn them off. As soon as they pop up on TV or on the box. turn them off. If they feature in print, don't buy the publication. The only reason they survive is because they or their bosses think that they attract listeners and readers. Right now, as soon as anyone mentions Corby, off it goes.

I think the point is, the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition is a once a year thing, and a huge deal in the fashion/sport/publishing world in the USA for some reason. So the models used all seem to be very well known because of this and so Air New Zealand are cashing in on the fame of known models (to some) rather than just unknown kiwis (like the flight crew members seen).

It is a'themed' safety video just like all of the others over the past year or two. It's cashing in on the 50th anniversary of the Sports Illustrated 'Swimsuit Edition'. The safety procedures are all covered but with a 'swimsuit model' twist. The earlier ones had a LoTR twist, All Blacks twist, etc.
There is NO controversy. The only outraged ones are feminist academics, opinionated full of hot air broadcasters and auto-cue readers.

I love Air NZ's innovative ads & safety vids, this one is no exception. But with ads like this it's usually the 'women in comfortable shoes' brigade that are first to bleat and moan

I was disgusted. I've been trying to download it from all the available sites so that nobody has to endure watching it . As the cartoon goes..." Dear Santa, please send some clothes to those poor women on Daddys computer".

There was a bit of free entertainment onboard an Air NZ A320 I was on this morning enroute from Wellington to Auckland (on NZ418). I was seated in one of the emergency exit rows, and just across the aisle a woman took exception to the flight safety video. She put sleep shades over her eyes and headphones over her ears during the safety briefing. A member of the cabin crew had a go at her over it and told her that because she was seated in an emergency exit row, she was required to take notice of the safety briefing. The woman told the flight attendant, "I'm an intelligent woman and I'm NOT going to watch that sexist crap!" There was a bit of a Mexican standoff over it. The hard case thing, is that she wasn't your usual stereotypical feminist type, but was a drop-dead gorgeous bimbo just like the chicks in the video. I guess they are going to end up with a few dramas like that on flights until they next change to a new flight safety video.

How is it sexist? It shows rich, powerful women being themselves, doing what they do for a career. No-one has forced them to appear. They have chosen to live their lives that way, and yet some busy-body feminists cannot help sticking their oar in and telling them how to live their lives. I think that is pretty sexist, trying to restrict their freedom to do what they want simply because they are pretty women.

I flew from Auckland back to Wellington this afternoon, on NZ439, and instead of the new flight-safety video, they had reverted to the Middle Earth flight-safety video.
I wonder if Air NZ has had a few incidents similar to the one I witnessed yesterday on other flights?
One has to wonder.

People need to lighten up a bit. Air NZ's safety videos have been a bit hit and miss; Rico - what were they thinking! "I looov de Kiwi beeches" "she has nice bush...", but overall the idea is a terrific one; it makes people sit up and take notice of what is a mundane (yet necessary) aspect of flying. Its part of being competitive in the industry you're in. Other companies in other industries try and don't quite hit the mark - Seven Sharp anyone?

from The Dominion Post....No sexism, just hobbits for Air NZ's new safety videoFairfax NZ | 12:13PM - Friday, 08 August 2014SEEMS SPACIOUS: An Orc tests out Air New Zealand’s new Premium Economy seat.AFTER its safety video featuring bikini-clad models went down like a lead balloon, Air New Zealand has returned to more prudent territory with another Hobbit-themed safety video.
The airline received criticism for its Safety In Paradise video released in February, which featured scantily clad Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition models.
The video was removed from circulation in July following assertions of sexism from the public, including a Change.org petition which received more than 11,000 signatures.
At the time, a spokeswoman for Air New Zealand said the video's removal was scheduled and not a response to the criticism.
The latest video in the franchise is its second with a Hobbit theme.
It was directed by Taika Waititi, of vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows fame.
The as-yet-untitled video features cameo appearances from Waititi, Hobbit director Peter Jackson, Weta Workshop co-founder, Richard Taylor, as well as cast members from the Hobbit films.
The video was shot in Central Otago this week.
It will begin showing on flights from late October, preceding the release of the final Hobbit film, The Battle of the Five Armies, scheduled for release in December.www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/10363023/No-sexism-just-hobbits-for-Air-NZs-new-safety-video

It's about time it was realised that Pam Corkery is not now and never has been other than a foul-mouthed publicity seeker. She's been doing it for years. On the other hand, the raging red-head gardner is simply a raging feminist who wanted a child of her own without due process so got herself pregnant then promptly dissolved the relationship. These two are hardly arbiters of public morality, taste,or decency.
