Hailey and Laura! I'm in the same position you were a year ago, except I haven't done the interview yet, just recently passed the aircrew testing. Any advice you guys could give me for what sort of questions they ask? And also, since you guys recently did oasb, any advice for that as well? Thanks Kim ?

I did the swim test 51 years ago in the Boy Entrant School, it was in the (unheated) pool at Woodbourne, and it was in boots and overalls, and swimming togs, and it was half an hour from memory, (there's more to that story, but not here. As far as the run is concerned, I don't really remember, but I do remember(after a bit of horse play after lights out)the whole flight taken out for a run around the perimeter track at about 1am. Good luck both of you. isc

Just thought I'd bump this thread and just see if there is any consensus on anything to study up for before OASB?
I'm currently serving in the NZArmy but just put my papers in for a service change to RNZAF as a pilot. Have my CPL although I know that counts for very little, and have been held back by eyesight requirements in the past but according to the recruiter I e-mailed a few weeks ago the requirements have been relaxed a bit, so I should (hopefully!) be good to go!
Any tips/tricks would be appreciated.

Back in '64 I remember us being told that half the annual intake of pilot trainees would be taken from within the service, I don't think any of 21 course BES got their wings, one was killed in a Iroquois crash in 1972, but he was ground crew. isc

I have no idea about now but in the mid 80's there would be the odd CFR or Officer remuster but I would be surprised if it averaged out at any thing over 20%. I think we would be talking about 1 or 2 of the graduating cadets each course coming from a service background. Not all that many when I think about it. I can think of a PT Officer, a Psych and a Nav all go on wings course but probably a few more coming from the ranks over the period. There were a few Navy types and a couple of Army over the years as well.
I also had the feeling that some of the older pilots about had come from the ranks though so it may have been a more common route of the earlier years. It would be interesting to see how it compares with the present intakes.

I can't say what the numbers of the intakes were per course maybe 10. It's all change today, especially compared to an elderly friend I had in the 1970s, he was a pilot WW1, 20 minutes dual, 20 minutes solo, survive that, your a fighter pilot, life expectancy, wait for it--- another 20 minutes. He lived to fly transport aircraft WW2. isc

fiftythree hi there, can you please tell me if the swim, weighted run etc was something you done as part of the officer selection board process? Also can you do a general itinerary of what the day consists of please. I am awaiting a date to meet with the Selection Board - Pilot. Would appreciate any current information. Thanks Kath

Hi Kathwharton,
Sorry it's taken me ages to reply. The weighted march and press ups at the OASB are an introduction to the requirements of the fitness test. It's not an assessment.
The aicrew swim test is though. It's five lengths in overalls and boots, 15 minutes treading water in a confined area in the same overalls and boots and a rescue tow most of the length of the pool. It's pretty straight forward if you're confident in the water and reasonably fit.
Probably against forum rules but if you add an e-mail address I'll send you my advice sheet for the board. My last one was October 2017 and I've passed it twice.
