Just found this old photo of Ohakea (RNZAF or RNZAF Museum Official) and was thinking about the good old days, when I spotted what I think is a Mirage, whick looks in a bad state. Does anyone remember what this was all about. I would be interested in knowing waht happened. Thanks.

That Mirage had fuel tank leak problem and stayed behind to be fixed after the squadron went back to oz.The RAAF offered it to us for free as they were going to be scrapped, but our government turned it down. They had to send a crew out to fix it and fly it home. That was the last time the Mirages came to NZ.

I have a different question relating to that photo.
Where did the LOX compound used to be then?
It was next to 14SQN when I was at Ohakea, I assumed it had always been there but clearly not.

Great photo! The memories are flooding back.
The LOX compound is still in the same place in the photo Phil. It has a roof over it so you can't see the big LOX tank. It was always like that.
That photo must have been around April 1987. The Mirages were over for the 50th Anniversary Airshow. It was the last time they came to NZ. I remember they looked pretty tired. Some were in the old camo scheme and a couple were in an all over light grey low vis scheme, which this 'broken' one looks like it is wearing.

Pity you didn't grab it. It's probably in Pakistan now!

There was a Mirage tail in the knuck's crewroom at 75 sqn. It now resides in Dr Dave's hangar at Milson along with lots of other memorabilia and stuff from the ACF crewrooms and Ohakea Museum.

When the Mirages were parked outside AMS the Auzzies were flying the boxing kangaroo flag. I was ordered to go over there and obtain the flag. I walked over to the flag pole while they were at their morning brief and liberated it. We then flew it from the 75Sqn flag pole.

Free and they turned it down , be the same year two ripped in over Wigram Wing and Wheels, both camo jobbies.
