Hi Guys,
First post here, I have scoured google and plenty of aeroclub websites around, and am now resorting to asking you kind folk.
Does anybody know of a flight school or aeroclub that can complete a tail wheel rating on a Cessna 185 for me? The fleet manager for my company has requested I complete the rating on this aircraft.
Any help or direction would be appreciated.
Kind Regards

Off the top of my head Ace Aviation in Masterton had a C185, not sure if that is still the case but may pay to give them a bell.

Try the Waitomo Aero Club (Te Kuiti)- they had one available recently.

Hey - tell your fleet manager I'll fly his 185 for him...I'm current and nothing to do at the moment From what I've read you need a 'tailwheel endorsement' and a 185 Rating? ..if that's correct then maybe it's best to do some time in a Cub first then tackle the 185. This would make it easier. If your company has a 185 surely they have someone 'in house' to endorse you? If you just need an instructor I can give you some leads.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies.
I am based in Papua, Indonesia. Looking to make a trip back home for the rating end of May. I need a tail wheel endorsement, and he has requested this be done on the 185 due to its difficulty. We do not have any 185's in fleet so in house training is not possible. The fleet is the Pilatus Porter and I'm currently flying the Cessna Caravan.
I will try both Ace Aviation and Waitomo Aeroclub, but any more leads will still not be overlooked!
Thanks ub

Gat a 180 rating instead. You'll find it easier to locate a 180 online somewhere and from then it will be easier to hunt out a 185 for a quick conversion.
If the 185 rating is only in prep for the Turbo Porter then just go for a 180 rating, easier to find an aircraft. Most 185 are privately owned and finding one for a type conversion without personally knowing someone is highly unlikely. I could arrange a 180 and do the type rating either in Blenheim or Christchurch / South Canterbury area. If you have no tailwheel time at all it has the potential to take a few hours so budget on 4 or 5 (if you are current) if doing it from scratch and all in the 180/185. Lastly, be prepared to pay somewhere near $500/hr for the aircraft.
Kerry Conner from Ace Aviation is now CFI at Queenstown and I don't think Ace is running anymore.

Is George O'Brien still working up there? He will be able to sort out both plane and pilot.
Say gday from Mit to him!

Hi Dragonfly,
Thanks for the advice, I shall have a chat to my fleet manager and get his feedback about the 180 and then get back to you.
George is still here, I'll hit him up.

I doubt if your 'Fleet Manager' would have any problems with doing it on the 180 an it looks like that will be an easier option. If you have any difficulty get back to me and I can put you in touch with a very good friend in NZ who has a 180 and instructor rating who might be able to help. You'd be welcome to have a go at mine but it's in the UK so a bit of a hike from Papua. [Just come back from a few weeks 'holiday' in Papua - you'll enjoy flying the Porter there - you may recognise this guy ]

185s and 180s are pricey from what I've seen. I ended up doing some time on a Maule, M5-235c. Same same power and size to a 180 but cheaper. NC Training have one at Rangiora. They can issue the rating as well.

I think finding a 185 instructor is getting harder each year, with instructors retiring (age, medical and otherwise) and the type slowly fading away from commercial use in NZ. There are still a few around, depending on what part of the country you are in. I can help, but not currently current on type

Do you have a machine available? I can certainly do it but don't have ready access to a 185 or 180.

If you are coming near Oz and still have a problem with the 185 and instructor I can put you in contact with Paul Bennet who has 185 and can sign you out.
