Hi
My name is Mike Wesley-Smith and I am a 3 News Reporter. I am doing some research into Missing Aircraft in New Zealand.
I was wondering if anyone knew what the NZ Orion's search capabilities were (i.e. could they detect wreckage located under dense bush/ice/snow)? Is searching in Alpine regions particularly difficult?
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

I'd suggest you forward your questions to Defence communications group: Air Force Public Relations Air Staff HQNZDF Private Bag Wellington New Zealand Or you could use their online form: forms.nzdf.mil.nz/airforce/pr.htmlThey can then forward your request to the appropriate 5 SQN personnel for comment, rather than relying on the semi informed opinion you will probably get on here. Although the P-3K2 has an enhanced over land capability, it is still primarily a maritime aircraft.

Quite, especially as the sensor and avionics fit of the Orions has been greatly upgraded recently, so few non-current service members will be familiar with it.

it still has installed 24 sensors that were there back in 1966, and they work the same as they did back then. These sensors are so good they will never be replaced.
