Gentlemen, this morning at 7.45 My Grandfather Clifford Harry Palmer died at his room at Anthony Wilder retirement home, he had just been in the home for less than a week! Up to 3 weeks ago he was still living at his home ( alone, Grandma died 15 years ago) and still driving, but everything started to become too much for him and he could not look after himself so was admitted to Hospital for assessment. They found that his Heart was on the verge of giving out and his lungs full of water and his kidneys failing, so he was given a room at the home to get the care he needed. Clifford was an Englishman born in 1922 who joined the RAF regiment when the war started and was highly trained with the Regiment before being accepted for Aircrew. He Trained as an Air Gunner and knew more about the Guns than the instructors and was often asked to take the lesson instead of being taught. He served with 547SQN Coastal Command flying Liberator Bombers and seen out a Tour.
He later joined the RNZAF ( after applying from England) in 1953 where he served as a GSI then in the Catering. He was awarded the RNZAF Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1965. He was a proud old Soldier who was fiercely independent and was a fantastic Grandfather and Great Grandfather to my sons.
I will miss going to the Anzac and Battle of Britain services at Wigram and the Beers we would have with his old Airforce mates at the Brevet Club, ( Which he was the president for 2 years)
Rest in Peace Clifford....we loved him so much
Your loving Grandson Paul Denton

A beautifully-written tribute, thanks Paul, they are (and were) members of a very special generation. Go well Clifford.
