Hello,
My special interest is 304 Polish Squadron and I have recently been informed that a 75 Squadron Vickers Wellington 1c was hit by flak and seriously damaged but made it back to England and crashed in Thetford Forest.
The aircraft details I have been given are Serial No X9764 Squadron Code AA-V Crash date 13th August 1941
My problem with this is that Serial No X9764 was lost over Belgium with all crew on 6th April 1942. Squadron Codes are frequently duplicated but Serials are unique to each aircraft.
Is it possible that the 75 Squadron crash was not a total loss and this aircraft was resurrected and transferred to 304 Squadron?
Does anyone have the full story of the 75 Squadron crash?

Hi archivist, Yes, a very full explanation, complete with photos, can be found here: www.feltwell.net/raffeltwell/articles/night_petrol_ran_out_75NZ_story.htm"The Wellington was deemed to be repairable, it was taken back to Vickers and rebuilt. Giving good service it was eventually shot down over Germany. On that occasion, none of the airmen on board managed to escape." Cheers, Chris

Thanks Chris,
I had hoped for a few dry statistics and a rough outline of the story. But this is just amazing! The crew of this aircraft (in its restored form) were not quite so lucky. They were shot down and all perished. They are buried at Geetbetz in Belgium
Thanks for a very quick and thorough answer Best Regards Neville
