Three-quarters of a century ago today, on the 1st of September 1939, the German Armed Forces stormed into Poland and set in motion events that would lead to the biggest, most destructive war in history.

THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE EXTRAORDINARY. WELLINGTON, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1939.
HIS Excellency the Governor-General has it in command from His Majesty the King to declare that a state of war exists between His Majesty and the Government of the German Reich and that such state of war has existed from 9.30 p.m., New Zealand standard time, on the third day of September, 1939.
Given at Wellington this third day of September, GALWAY, Governor-General.

Lest We Forget It's interesting that the the two major conflicts of the Twentieth Century, both have major aniversaries of their start this year and within a month or so of each other. I had five family members who fought in those conflicts (one in WWI and four in WWII) - Lest We Forget.

Lest we forget.
75 years and one day before this thread was started, Tasman Empire Airways Ltd received their first flying boat, the Aotearoa.
The advent of war meant much pressure was needed to get the second plane before TEAL could begin operations.
