Some people in Darwin reckoned NZ5804 did about as much damage as the Japs during the war, I think it wiped out the main road, the water supply, and something else, was it the railway line. And it was a good reason for having rear facing seats, no injuries. The engines failed on take off, and it was put down on the runway at 130kts. isc Yes, you are correct it across the Nth Australian Railway "The Never Never Railway", then hit main water pipe that supplies Darwin and the meatworks at the time and bounce onto the Sturat Highway which was the only road in and out of Darwin at the time. Parts of the NZ5804 are held by the local Darwin Air Museum in Winnellie.

What a formation - imagine the noise! I imagine the sound of the C-130H Hercules would have been totally buried in the sound coming from 4x Bristol Hercules plus 4x Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp engines.

Two more of the best three engined transport - both RNZAF: Talking about three-engine Handley Page Hastings transports, the following tale is a fascinating (although hair-raising) read.... • FIVE GET LUCKY by Brian Spurway

Very nice picture, is it Aden or somewhere else within the Near East or Middle East region?

The website has the title as "RAF Hastings at Nicosia". I'm unsure what Cyprus counts as? This bloke has some very nice paintings of occasionally unusual subjects: www.aeroartist.com/index2.htm

There is bound to be someone here that would be able to expand on further as I'm not near my library as I'm my using my Wi-Fi at work.

Cyprus was classified as Near East. If in doubt look at the markings on the crew door on the Kiwi "Zapped" Vulcan XH562 which came from Akotiri wing of NEAF Bomber Wing
