Well more fool the MOD then! Wouldn't surprise me if that rumour is true. They never cease to amaze. Perhaps they don't recall the near cancellations & bad performance reports of the C-130J (approx 2004 - here) or the C-17 itself (1994, see here). It seems every major new design goes through this phase - the A400M just happens to be entering it now. By the time we actually order anything, any problems will likely be gone (I think there aren't any slots in the A400M production line until 2017 anyway). American aircraft have their issues too (CH-148 anyone?; Kaman Seasprite according to the MOD itself in 2011 and the Aussies). To discount the A400M just because it is European would be grossly imprudent. P.S. I hope someone has already arranged for an A400M to visit Wellington, for the cabinet to look it over (they are the ones who will be ultimately making the decisions), considering there will be one so close (Geelong - the closest an A400M has ever been to NZ?) at the Avalon airshow this year. Then please do the same thing for the C-130J & C-17. Chis73

The RAAF C-17 just flew in to Wellington. Taking parliamentarians on evaluation flight is a unusual move. It looks more like consensus building than a sales pitch.

What do you think 40 Squadron's Boeings are for, Beags?

It popped into Woodbourne for about 2 hours, she's an impressive beast!

What do you think 40 Squadron's Boeings are for, Beags? unless there is other tasking to that area etc, cannot see it being used just for him

Chris 73, ref the Oz Seasprite debacle. Had we just purchased the airframes and inserted a reasonable suite of electronics it would have been ok. Our problem was trying to make it a Jesus machine that did everything for everyone. The electronics we wanted to put into it just couldn't work the way we wanted.... like trying to stuff a watermelon into a condom. In the end everything failed and we were left with nothing. Look at what you want, look at the length of service required, try to look at the potential demands and changes during that period and buy accordingly. Again, we should have bought the AH.64 or the Pommie version off the shelf and it would have been operational way before what we have now received its final sign-off.

My nephew, an Aussie Navy test pilot, said exactly the same thing - great aircraft, great electronics ideas, but not in the same frame within the government limitations

I just noticed that I had this shot which compares the C-17 with CN-235 in size. The C-295 is a stretched, up-powered CN-235. When12_3166 by errolgc, on Flickr

In my opinion that should be our future RNZAF right there.
