Was talking to a friend who lives near me and is a member of our RSA. She joined the WAAF in 1968 and finished her induction course at Wigram in April and was posted to Ohakea. She caught the Lyttleton-Wellington ferry Wahine which arrived at Wellington as Cyclone Giselle and another storm collided over the harbour. The rest is history. She managed to scrabble to a seat in one of the few lifeboats that could be used, but it flipped on its side in the surf at a beach and she got a ducking. Reckons she might as well have joined the Navy! Enjoyed her air force time nonetheless.

There were a few WAAF's on that trip. I have tried to find their names but cannot find a passenger manifest.

She was indeed, and finished up a WO. The girl "Pinky" swam ashore at Dorset having decided it was the best thing to do! The other [true] story was that the rest of the girls got out the guitar and were singing, "Michael Row The Boat Ashore"!

And another was Trudy, the lady I know. Don't know what her surname was then.
