So when do you count 'service' from? Ownership (we will pay if it breaks)? Arrival in-country? Allocation to operating unit (does the new 14 Squadron exist yet?)? IOC? FOC?

The remaining Iroquois helicopters should all get a gold watch painted on them, since the fleet is retiring.

Ha! so that's what I saw when I drove past the other day. I didn't get a good look and I thought it may have been a visiting aircraft.
As an aside - is it true that our hercs 001, 002 and 003 were the first three H models off the production line? I seem to recall hearing or seeing that somewhere years ago.

Yes, according to the RNZAF www.airforce.mil.nz/about-us/what-we-do/aircraft/hercules.htmFleet History The RNZAF currently operates five C-130 Hercules. It took delivery of the first three Hercules (NZ7001 - NZ7003) in 1965. These were the first C-130H production models off the Lockheed production line. A further two C-130H, (NZ7004 - NZ7005) were added in 1969. The aircraft have undergone a modernisation and structural improvement programme to ensure that they last until 2015. I think the original use by date may have been 2017. The rebuild apparently will give them a life of 38 years on average, beyond 2017. The latest dates I can see for replacement is 2020/25, but from what I'v seen of the govt, they will want to keep them flying for the next 40 years. Hope no silly B****r changes the flag, it would spoil that tail art. isc

In response to Errol C question of ownership. the general rule of thumb for RNZAF aircraft is the "Brought on Charge" date which is defined as the official day that an aircraft is handed over to the service. In the case of the first Orions NZ4201/NZ4202 the "BOC" date is 1 August 1966, although the first aircraft didn't reach NZ until 27 September 1966

Herc on TV tonight, heading to Vanuatu with cyclone relief, pity, they missed the tail art, or perhaps that hasn't got it yet. An Orion, and another Herc going tomorrow. isc

If it's anything like the No. 5 Squadron Orion 40th tail art in 2006 they may only apply it to one of the aircraft in the fleet.
