David, I'm very sure I know the very Tractor you are talking about, Specifically use as an aircraft tug, Wigram's 'Tilly' was more a bulldozer in the Pacific for airfield builds, very certain the crane gear was a lash up once its job was completed, more likely used on Green Island ? not sure .

I'm reliably told by an ex-No 11 SU man that their Cletrac when not towing anything could be a very grunty and fast beast to drive round. He and a mate went for a hoon in one at Guadalcanal (from memory), crashing around at rapid speed in the very long grass rarking it up, and then they came to a very sudden halt. On investigating they discovered they'd driven into a massive network of telephone cables that ran between the NZ camp and the US camp up the hill. It had acted like an arrestor line on them. Peter backed out quietly and slowly took the Cletrac back to their lines, and the pair said nothing. Sometime later they heard the US general up the hillwas sitting in his office and all of a sudden the telephone on his desk had up and flown out the window!! Along with several others no doubt. They were never found out, hahaha.

Baz, Have the stbd wing all finished except painting, flaps done, fuselage virtually structurally complete - minor riveting - port wing all except one skin cut, all spars and ribs stripped, treated, alodined, primed and finish painted and sitting in jig, all ADs done on motor, lots of smaller bits completed, fuel tanks (metal) done and pressure tested, seats need covering but I have all the materials, new control cables done, control columns and all pushrods etc finished.... but as anyone who has worked on any restoration/rebuild knows.... "When its 90% finished you have 90% left to go..."

... "When its 90% finished you have 90% left to go..." I'm using this one, shamelessly stolen from one of those TV renovation shows "It's a restoration not a race!"

Back to the beast that is the subject of this thread:
It's an International Harvester crawler, either T9 (petrol) or TD9 (diesel). I believe the device fitted to it is a Trackson Swing Crane It sat for years next to the most Northern hangar in Orchard Road; I used to admire it as much as I admired the winged things.
At some time it was obviously part of NAC but I believe it had its origins in Operation Deep Freeze. There are plenty of IHC pundits around Christchurch who would know its history, chapter and verse.
