The article gives the term 'barn find' a whole new meaning. Hopefully these items will go into preservation rather than be scrapped to satisfy some bureaucrat's whim. They would seem to both be 'combat' veterans (note the rings on the 88's barrel), and have 'original' WW II colour schemes. As such. IMHO, they really should be in a museum.

A Panther is worth literally millions of dollars. If they reckon he cannot have these, then the same authorities have to confiscate the Bf109's in Germany too! I hope he gets them back, or at least the value paid to him.

A question arising: If the 'owner' is 78 years old, then he was born in 1937, making him only eight years old when the European war ended. As I've yet to meet an eight year old with enough 'nouse' to recover and store anything larger than matchbox toys or pushbikes (certainly not anti aircraft guns or tanks), this presupposes 'adult' help, especially as both items are quite large, and would have required a lot of effort to bring them into the family home. An 88 or a Panther cannot be exactly smuggled-in under a wrapped-up raincoat!! On that basis, I suspect that there is a lot more to this story than we will ever know, especially as the newspapers are only interested in the 'sensational' aspects rather than the so-called 'minor details',which are usually more important. Any thoughts from the membership?

Nothing is impossible if you have the will. John Smith has a Mosquito, Kittyhawk, Mustang up in Nelson in a shed and he would have been a nipper when they were new.

I believe a Panther (or any large tracked vehicle) would be neat to resolve today's traffic congestion and parking problems!! Mr Bean rings a bell.

The Panther was recovered from a UK scrap yard in the 1970s, it had been built up tested in the UK post war. It was sold to this guy ( Herr Flick would you believe)and he restored it running condition. The story appeared in an After the Battle Magazine back in the 1980s, So not a 'new' find, but one that always had a low profile.

Does anyone have any idea why it looks like the German Government has ceased these items then? Does he owe them money?
