With this and other information on how China behaves, especially in the Pacific - our backyard - I can't believe how indifferent our leaders have been. The recent naming of China by the MoD is a nice if small change but Adern's opposition to militarisation of the Pacific is head-in-the-sand thinking which will result in some unfavourable long term consequences.

Just like her Mentor and string puller Helen-head-in-sand, that deluded fantasy of the pacific as a 'benign environment'. If China doesn't kick off, PNG is ripening well..

I heard on TV that Sri Lanka owes China Billions of $, and can't pay, so is proposing to borrow--- from the Chinese, the project that China is building there is set to rival Hong Kong, but won't be finished until the middle of the century. This is a commonwealth country. Then there is the Chinese working in the Pacific Islands ie Tonga. isc

I wonder what the chances of acquiring another 2-3 new airframes a bit further down the line are. Pretty sure NZDF are wanting another type of airframe to compliment the P-8 and they were also talking about drones... HC-130J is looking good.

They'v virtually taken over NZ. The owner of our local Fish & Chip shop owns at least 70 other properties, guess where she comes from, the staff come from there too. isc

Ditto for bakeries as well. Indians own most of the dairies. Indians and Chinese work hard, are prepared to put in long hours and usually run these business with their whole family involved. The difference is they are prepared to put in the hard work and we kiwis don't have it in us anymore, especially the younger generation.

If they are, then I have no issue. But our local Fish 'n' Chip shop has been owned and run by a Chinese family, for like ever and they are the kindest of people. They run a business, giving to NZ economically, their 3 daughters and 1 son go to NZ schools being bought as Kiwi's socially and culturally as well as adding to the diversity of multicultural New Zealand society. However, this is getting off topic so here is a pic of a plane...

Any idea what sensors are in the bulge on the underside?
And a nice big window behind the door ideal for a 105 sticking out the side.

Kiwirob & nighthawknz, those Chinese you remember from years back, your mum and dad probably remember them too, they came as early settlers, like the Market Gardeners down Pukekoi, and the gold miners in Central Otago. But the ones at our shop are here on work VISAs, and(they are at the moment)they head off homea number of times each year, and apart from what's essential for selling chips, they speak Chinese. Nothing against them , themselves, nice blokes, and sometimes there are one or two women. isc

Any idea what sensors are in the bulge on the underside? Fush and Chups shop sensors maybe? Seriously the experts will know better than me but I think its the ESM antennas which is a modified system from the EF-18 Growler.

You might be right about that, the P8 can sniff out tomato sauce from 100km away! Oops, right about the other bit- ESM: www.b737.org.uk/mma.htm

Evening all,
This link appears a couple of years old but was interesting to watch and listen to an ex P3 Orion pilot talk about the P8 Poseidon.
Have a watch here:
Makes me think we (NZ) have made a really good choice there. Although there is an emphasis on ASW missions in the guys talk, they do make it pretty clear that the airframe is built and designed for low altitude SAR mission templates from the outset. This is pleasing to know given there have been a number of us querying if the P8 could loiter and handle the SAR mission, which correct me if I’m wrong is something our P3’s have often been called upon to do.
Now just standing by for the DCP for an indication on what may be the additional capabilities and what the future may hold in this area.
Personally I’m hoping for possibly an extra airframe or two down the road a bit (subject to how long Boeing keeps the factory open for....last orders and all that - though could be wishful thinking there......OK that’s never going to happen...!!!) and also I’d like to see the intergration of UAVs, which is where I think the Aussies have gone with MQ-4(?) Tritons.
Anyway, link to the YouTube vid is worth a watch I reckon.
Cheers,
JT

For complimentary capability I still think a platform capable of maritime and lift would have the most political support and would therefore be the most realistic. When is this document supposed to be out?

Pretty sure NZDF are wanting another type of airframe to compliment the P-8 and they were also talking about drones... DID have announced that Australia has ordered Four Gulfstream G555 which will be delivered with an electronic warfare (EW) fit in a deal worth 1.7 billion. These will be based at Edinburgh along with the P-8's and MQ-4C Tritons. Which way are we going to go?
