When Oz takes delivery of the Tritons it shall prove to be a massive force multiplier. At Avalon it was very interesting to watch the Global Hawk land and taxi down the runway. It could have gone all the way to its display position operated from the USA. First time one has ever done that at an airshow anywhere in the world. Scary to watch at the same time. Rep from Northrop Grumman was in commentary position and mentioned a few things that were extraordinary and have no doubt they were true. Skynet.

Pretty sure NZDF are wanting another type of airframe to compliment the P-8 and they were also talking about drones... DID have announced that Australia has ordered Four Gulfstream G555 which will be delivered with an electronic warfare (EW) fit in a deal worth 1.7 billion. These will be based at Edinburgh along with the P-8's and MQ-4C Tritons. Which way are we going to go? These are replacing the 2x AP- 3 Orions used for SIGINT...…………. sneaky pete's

Watching Reapers come and go from Fort Huachuca a few years ago was interesting. Odd knowing that the driver was a few hundred miles away at Creech AFB. One of the guys I was working with from Pennsylvania ANG liked to moon them regularly as they taxied past to see if they'd ever chase it up. No luck unfortunately...

From todays various Defence Spending/Planning announcements it looks like the supplement to the P-8 fleet is going to be us latching into a satellite reconnaissance system rather than (a) a smaller fixed wing Spartan/C295 type or (b) an RQ-8 style drone.

From todays various Defence Spending/Planning announcements it looks like the supplement to the P-8 fleet is going to be us latching into a satellite reconnaissance system rather than (a) a smaller fixed wing Spartan/C295 type or (b) an RQ-8 style drone. From the plan... Enhanced Maritime awareness capability
177. The Enhanced Maritime Awareness Capability project will support the Government’s civil maritime security strategy, providing air surveillance capabilities that enhance all-of-Government maritime domain awareness in New Zealand and the Southern Ocean. The capabilities delivered through this investment will be dedicated to civil surveillance requirements, with Defence support for their delivery and operation. This will free up the new P-8A maritime patrol aircraft fleet to fly more missions in the South Pacific and further afield. Investment in a range of capabilities will be considered, including satellite surveillance, unmanned aerial vehicles and traditional fixed-wing surveillance. Indicative dates: Industry engagement commences – Currently underway. Request for tender – 2020. Introduction into Service – 2023. Indicative capital cost: From $300m–$600m. It appears nothing has been ruled in or out as yet (including UAV's).

The Orions might now be able to up their annual flying hours so that at change over time they are just on out of hours, might as well wring the last minute out of their 50yr life, because I don't think they are going on to continue an operational career in some other Airforce. isc

And if so, does that mean the P-3K2's may have to be around till 2025 till the P-8 crews and aircraft are fully up to operational speed?

IOC is initial operating capability. As soon as the first RNZAF manned P-8 enters NZ airspace that will be pretty much the end of the P-3K2.

www.airforce-technology.com/news/new-zealand-receive-p-8a-poseidon/First crews go out for P-8 conversion in 2022, makes sense that they'll come home in the new frames as they roll off the line in early 23. Also interested to see what the make up of the 'enhanced maritime awareness capability' is going to be, wonder when that will be fleshed out?

Also interested to see what the make up of the 'enhanced maritime awareness capability' is going to be, wonder when that will be fleshed out? Indeed. "A commitment will also be made for an enhanced air surveillance capability, potentially utilising long range unmanned aerial vehicles. This capability will be dedicated to civil surveillance tasks, supporting the New Zealand Police, Customs, Immigration, the Department of Conservation, Maritime New Zealand and the Ministry for Primary Industries." I'm also very interested in the Satellite Maritime Surveillance capability. That could potentially be a much bigger game changar than any airborne system.
