Here's a great shot from Facebook (hence the "joke") of the Avenger on its way from Hamilton to Wigram to join the RNZAF Museum collection, on the deck of HMNZS Waikato. I guess it must have been towed from Hamilton across the Kaimais to Tauranga's port to be loaded onto the frigate? And then towed again across the Port Hills from Lyttleton? Quite a mission, all told, I'm sure. Was anyone here involved with the move?

Unable to help there. BUT the background looks to be more like Auckland's harbour, rather than Tauranga. The Island off the bow looks like Rangitoto, then to the left in the distance is Whangaparoa.

Changing the subject slightly, has anyone been able to determine on which Avenger the nose art, which Dave Homewood uses in his address on the forum, was applied? As far as I am aware it is still a mystery but I may have missed its being solved.

Just a thought as to the identity of the "Who said the b..... couldnt fly". The subject aircraft appears on page one of this thread. Can we identify any of the men in the photograph? If we can then perhaps we can link one or more of them to a regular aircraft which just might be sufficient to determine its identity by process of elimination.

Referring to my post immediately above; does anyone know if any of the three airmen would happen to be S/Ldr M Wilkes, H N James or R G Hartshorn? Confirmation of any such information would be appreciated. FYI I have good reason to name those three men.

Confirmation of any such information would be appreciated. FYI I have good reason to name those three men. Mick Wilkes, Noel James and Richard Hartshorn were all pilots, so it can only be the man in the middle, as the other two are an Observer (right) and a WAG (left). This is a photo of Noel James, second from left, at a No. 30 Squadron Reunion in Gisborne in June 1968. It's hard to say if it is the same chap.

Here's Noel James again in June 1974, on the left

Thanks Dave - Looks like we've struck gold in identifying the mystery nose art aircraft. I was handed correspondence yesterday at Classic Flyers linking those three men as all having their "personal" aircraft Avenger NZ2522. I will send you a copy in the next few days.

I wonder how long the nose art stayed on, especially for the aircraft that survived the war. I've seen a photo of NZ2504 with her nose art intact at an airshow post war with the yellow rear fuselage and Blue Sea Grey upper surfaces and one showing NZ2522 in an air to air shot in the same 1944/45 target tug scheme but no nose art. Yes I posted that photo, it's at Gisborne. It was on this very thread. I might have to go back through and repair all these photos I'd posted when I get a chance.

Well I have repaired some of my broken linked photos here. But the ones that I posted that were sent in by a "forum reader" in October 2015, I have no clue now who sent them and I cannot find the original shots. Whoever you were, if you read this, can you please contact me and re-send the shots? The Wayback Machine has sadly not archived this thread. Here's that one you were after Peter L.

I just realised we had two separate Avenger Pile threads running, one started in 2012,and one in 2015. So I have merged them and now there's a load more photos at the beginning of this thread.
