On Friday the 23rd of September 2016 I had the great pleasure to accompany former RNZAF Sunderland aircrew members Barrie Irvine (Pilot) and Jim McHerron (Air Signaller) onboard Short Sunderland NZ4118 "Q for Queenie" at the Museum Of Transport And Technology, in Auckland. The pair had flown together in the same Sunderland crew in the late 1950's and early 1960's, but they'd not seen each other in many years as Jim lives in Australia now; and furthermore it had been over 50 years since they'd last stepped into a Sunderland. They'd both converted onto the Lockheed P-3B Orions in 1966 and left the old Sundy behind.
So now they were back in their faithful old flying boat, and the memories, stories and technical details flowed. I had the great privilege to accompany them and film this nostalgic visit, and to throw them the odd question. With us also throwing questions there way were Grant McHerron (Jim's son and my WONZ Live Show co-host); Vanessa Hefer and Frank Hannay from MOTAT, and Errol Cavit, taking photos. So, step back in time with us into the Short Sunderland, and hear all about this grand old aeroplane that served so well with No. 5 Squadron and No. 6 Squadron RNZAF... Thanks to the MOTAT staff and CEO Michael Frawley for arranging this visit

I'm gutted because the original footage files are lovely and sharp in HD like your photos, but they were so huge they were overwhelming the edit suite's memory, which has never happened before. So in order to get the film made and online I had to dumb down the quality, and the final result on Youtube is a pale comparison. I wish i could figure out a way for it to be in the original sharp as HD format without the edit suite dying every five minutes.

I simply love that video, even low res it was good to watch and listen, I had to post a link to it at NZFF, the aircraft has change since last time I was in it, course Paul Harrison's book 'Kiwi Orions' would be a good follow with the history, Just Brilliant! Thanks Baz. Yes the Suderland looks great inside, there are some parts still being restored but evidently it's very complete and original otherwise, there was very little in there that the guys didn't recognise.

I've now added some more interior photos. I should do a bit more labelling and arranging, but there has been a bit on - not that I'm complaining!

Talking about large files - I have been downloading images of maps from Europe WWII and in Tiff Format they were 950MB in size, converting to .jpg down to 250MB was still an issue - waiting for ages before images resolved themselves!! (and only one at a time!!) Locked up laptop with 3 x 250MB jpgs open at once. Must watch the video, thanks Dave.
