I got a chance to see 'Tanker 43' again in 2005, this time at Abbotsford in B.C. Canada, by this stage she was at the end of her life and put out to pasture.

I remember at the time there were groups protesting saying the spray was a Government conspiracy aimed at dumbing down the Auckland population. I laughed back then, now I think they may have been onto something.

I still work for a company (AsureQuality) that is a descendant from MAF and one of my long serving colleagues was part of the biosecurity response effort for both Tussock moth and the later Painted Apple Moth. We both still get called on to hunt Queensland Fruit Fly (as contractors to MPI these days). He has become by defaullt our organisation's unofficial biosecurity historian. He was telling me the other day that no-one in MAF really bothered to take any photos of the DC-6 operation back then and he only has one little low-res image that he clipped from a newspaper at the time. Would you mind if he took copies of some of these images to use in his historical presentations? He is occasionally called on to show some of the history of biosecurity responses in NZ and having some better images would be great. No problem giving full credit to the original photographer. What he would really like, if anyone has good ones, is images of the aircraft actually spraying. What have the WoNZ crew got that they wouldn't mind sharing? Thanks Evan

Shouldn't be a problem if you wish to use. I also have some excellent prints of the aircraft spraying, however they were photographed by friends...I guess if the correct credit was given....

TVNZ and/or TV3 used to play footage of the spraying operations, nice early morning sunrise footage, during their news bulletins

I can remember footage of Paul Holmes onboard the DC-6 (in the cockpit) during one of the spraying missions over Auckland.
It was shown on the “Holmes” show on TV One.

These days, you'd have conspiracy theorists accusing the government of spraying chemtrails onto the JAFAs.

Just like 20 years ago, that is exactly what they were being accused of

Those are great photos! (And YouTube clip, thanks Dave). Do you want to post them with a watermark credit overlaid? Or would you just be happy to just write how you want them credited and I will make sure that info gets passed on. They will be used as educational/historical aids and will not be used in any "for profit" situations. Thanks for digging them out. We appreciate that some folk were strongly opposed to the spraying, but we are just interested in recording the history.

I am always distrustful of any product that has "con" in the brand name.
But is this company Conair the one that transports prisoners in the USA, like in the movie of the same name?

Nope. Con Air (like the movie) is just the nickname for the Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System run by the American federal government. Conair Ltd. is a Canadian company that specializes in spraying and firefighting aircraft.

There was also Connair (earlier known as Connellan Airways) in Australia, again a totally different company. Popular name!

There was also Connair (earlier known as Connellan Airways) in Australia, again a totally different company. Popular name! My Uncle flew for Connellan Airways (mainly DC-3's out of Darwin). Founded by Eddie Connellan one of the pioneers of commercial Australian aviation. The name is still slightly tarnished by sad events in Darwin in 1977, but this topic is perhaps for another thread....

I know well what you're referring to, pepe, I've done a lot of research into the 1977 incident over the past few months.
