Delighted to see the USAF are bringing the F-22 demo team back And at last I get to see a B-1B in the metal... albeit on static but i'm still ecstatic Another first for me is the A400 & the Singaporean Strike Eagle. Cant wait!

Typical, I'm working again...could the organisers at least give me a yell to see if I'm busy that week? Honestly, this is the second decent airshow I was all geared up to see and work gets in the way grrr.
(And yes, I could take leave, but have to take a week off each time, not just a couple of days.)

Well the announcement a couple of days ago about the 2 x F-35's & Growlers making their downunder debut has really put the icing on the cake - I must say i have not anticipated an airshow this much since my trips to Duxford & RIAT a few years back! BUT I'm surprised by the notion that no other Kiwi forum members are crossing the ditch for such a superb show. Have arranged flights for my eldest lad who is boarding in Chch, don't want him missing this one & with the Air NZ sale it was only a few bucks more than flying into Palmy to see the Ohakea show Jonesy - take the week's leave

Avalon simply does not thrill me I'm afraid. Especially not this time of year. They're expecting temperatures into the 40's Celcius this weekend, well I am not ever doing that again after near death temperatures at Temora, uh-uh, no way. Especially not to just look at boring pointy, noisy grey things with no souls.

Hahahahaha. Not counselling, just a paddock full of WWII warbirds is all I need.

Hahahahaha. Not counselling, just a paddock full of WWII warbirds is all I need. Or a paddock full of WWI warbirds! Oooops, I forgot....I get that “ locally” to where I live (as in 4km down the road) every month from November to April each summer/autumn flying season, with a couple of ex-RNZAF WWII warbirds residing in one of the same hangars as the WWI warbirds as the icing on the cake. Not rubbing it in, or anything, just mentioning it in passing....

Went Friday.
We were supposed to fly down from Essendon in our DC-3 but an orchestrated littany of cockups put paid to that.
But work sprung for Gold passes and we wangled our way into the Shell Chalet for most of the evening - alcohol was consumed.
First time I had been for about 14 years - pretty impressed with the F22 - bit of a jizz machine.

I went along on Saturday my first time at this event. The weather was perfect. I can see what ppl were raving about on the Air Tattoo page, the F16 pilot did a brilliant display. The F22 also was mind blowing. Although the RAAF F35 was not on the program to fly they did get one up which did a few "missed approaches", made my day. The B1 and Apache and singa F15s and tanker great to see. Kiwi C130 did a great job.. The RAAF Rhino did a handling display early in the day which had some really neat stuff you don't see in the classic hornet demo. To top off Had a good chat with the F16 detachment commander and flight surgeon and classic hornet pilot who went to Ohakea..all nice ppl. Plenty of classic hornet mock attacks and low breaks to test the eardrums... everything was well run and considering it looked like a massive crowd ..the parking went well. Left with big smile on the face.. well done Avalon, RAAF, foreign forces and all participants.

G'day all, a few pics from me from last weekend. It was a fantastic show, my third Avalon (2007 & 2013) & this time I flew my son over from Chch to experience it too. Now classed at the 5th biggest show in the world it is worthy of consideration for any diehard airshow nutters who want to take in some "grey & souless" jets for a bit of variety There is a huge Expo which runs a few days before the show itself with many major defence & industry businesses participating. This time round I only got through half of the expo in nearly 2 hours (I got stuck on a simulator stand for ages trying out a 3D sim with VR goggles dogfighting MiG's in a Super Hornet) . the Expo is open to the general public from 2pm on the Friday. The Aussie Chief Of Air Force hosts a Chiefs symposium so CAF's from many nations attend and there are some pretty fascinating military people to chat with just at the expo alone. My preference was again to arrive on the Friday and head out around midday just as general admission. That gives time to get photos of the static displays without big crowds, to take in the Expo and some of the ground displays. This year I didn't stick around to see the night flying display but friends that did said it was great. There was another major exhibition on drones which I didn't get time to take in but noted there were drones there ranging is size from the Global Hawk (flamin yuuuuge!) right down to wee things that some Army lads were showing not much bigger than a ballpoint pen with a 1.5km range and an incredibly detailed camera.. The ADF are investing heavily on drone technology for all 3 services, there was some impressive kit on display from the bits I saw. On Saturday I again did the gold pass thing. It was $190 but worth it. I think the only ADF aircraft type not present was a Chinook but everything seemed to have been represented. The 2 F-35's were a major drawcard and the pilots and senior Lockheed Martin guys from the programme were great to chat to. The first EA-18G Growler was on display, a dozen of these will equip No.6 Squadron in a new role for the RAAF. Pilatus had a beaut display including the first 2 PC-21's for the RAAF - a nice looking bit of kit. Avalon itself is around 40 minutes in a train from Southern Cross station in the Melbourne CBD then 5 minutes in a bus which takes you within 100m from the turnstiles. A return airshow ticket is $15 including the bus so if you are staying in town you'd be mad to take a car! On the Sunday we visited the B-24 rebuild project at Werribee and the RAAF Museum at Point Cook, then all flew home that arvo. Happy birthday 1 Squadron! Show us yer Growler! Boeing brought over their newest version of the Apache, the AH-64E P-8A Poseidon & AP-3C flying over one of the new 'Romeo' Seahawks during the anti-sub display An incredible display on the Saturday - this thing can really move and the afterburner is huge. 43,000lbs of thrust, what a ride

Maintaining a theme set earlier in this thread, not grey and pointy, not hi tech, not even fast, afterburners are for softies, raw flames the real thing!
A mate just sent me this, Super Constellation after dark at Avalon, turning fossil fuel into horse power and flames, a thing of beauty! (check the slow mo from around 50)
