I had a great surprize today. Just before lunch a lady walked up to me at the workbench and asked if I was Mike. Turns out she (Maureen Massey) is the Vice President of the HARS museum in Wollongong and was visiting off a cruise ship at Tauranga. Still haven't figured out how she knew my name and was keen to see what we were working on. The Air Chathams crew were running up the Dak engines in preparation of a couple of sightseeing trip and she mentioned that she owns one currently at the HARS museum. She is also type rated on the Connie and regularly fly's it to displays around the country. Quite a coincidence as on Friday 7 December I am giving a talk to the BOP branch of the RAeS and the subject is my recent trip to the HARS museum. Maureen arrives home from the cruise on the Friday and has promised to email me some info and photos to include in my lecture. How quirky is that. I managed to get a couple of photos of her and Des standing in front of the Dak. 281118 009 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 281118 011 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 281118 007 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr

Great stuff Mike. Believe me, this forum gets read by people all across New Zealand and the world, and I know for a fact a lot of HARS team members are members of this forum, (we've even had a bunch of them attend one of our Forum Meets once), so I'm sure most of them are following the Classic Flyers threads with great interest. You're famous!

A team from Classic Flyers went up to Dairy Flat last Tuesday to pack up parts for the Meteor that will be coming down to Classic Flyers late January / early February. I hade a chance to wander round and look at the treasurers that Don has in his hangars so here are some of the photos I took. I glanced at your pictures thinking Don and crew must be reading their Hawker Hind construction drawings upside down, but finally clicked at seeing the radial that it was actually the Baffin. Just amazing to see this airframe coming together, an extinct type back from the dead. The Hind is still better looking though...

When the Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah engine arrived from Blenheim Des and I put our hands up to do the cleaning, repairs and painting to make the engine presentable for display in the main hangar. Richard built a display stand for the engine some time ago but the engines ended up behind heaps of other 'stuff' during the many shifts. With the clean out for the Meteor recently we managed to get our hands on it again and wheel it into a position where we could start doing some restoration. This week we have wheeled it outside and started spraying degreaser onto the mucky areas. Today I took my waterblaster in and we had a session with degreaser and high pressure water and have managed to get the engine looking a lot better. Some areas still need work doing on them but it is looking a lot better. We have managed, with help from Denys at Ferrymead Museum, to locate a suitable display prop for the engine and now need to get it up to Tauranga. We are still missing a mag and one other item that still needs to be identified. I am looking forward to doing some more work on this engine and getting it ready to display. 121218 006 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 121218 007 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 121218 010 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 121218 015 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 141218 012 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 141218 013 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr

As seems to be a regular happening now Bruce and Norm pushed the Aeromacchi out and gave it a run. Norm did the initial runs in front of the hangar and then Bruce got on board and ran it up and then taxied off towards the airport for a power run. It is a rowdy little beast even at ground idle and earphones are necessity but it is good to see her moving around under her own power. 141218 008 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 141218 010 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 141218 (4) by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 141218 (7) by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 141218 (8) by Mike Feisst, on Flickr

Not at this time. I would imagine that that exercise would be very expensive and we have heaps of other projects that require time and money.

One of the gliders that is hung up n the roof area of hangar 3 has suffered some hangar rash over the last year or so and the owner asked if we could get it down to floor level so that he can come in over the Christmas break and carry out some repair work. So that occupied some time today along with repacking the Meteor spares into another container that will remain with us. 211218 010 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr+ 211218 011 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 211218 016 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr 211218 017 by Mike Feisst, on Flickr

I went in yesterday to try some paint of the cleaned up parts of the Cheetah as there are three different colours needed to complete it. I managed to spray some silver on the heads and some black on the barrels just to see what it looked like. Seemed to work okay but that was the easy part as we cannot get the engine apart without damaging most of the hardware. Most of the rest will have to be hand painted. Yes the same to you Mike, this is one of my favourite threads. When the Yagi aerial is all finished could you email me a couple of photos? I'd like to do a little story about the Avenger/Auster connection in the club's magazine. Cheers and here's to 2019! Baz
