Have been inside it. Mostly photographs, models and a few artifacts. I offered them my Sunderland turret but they said it wasn't relevant. Can't remember the opening hours but they were something like 2pm to 2.15pm every second Sunday when there isn't an R in the month. They had quite a nice model of Viscount ZK-BRD in there at that time, though

I spied it when I stayed in the area recently as well. Waiting for the weather to clear at Masterton. The notice says its open Sundays as confirmed by www.nzmuseums.co.nz/account/3190 Unfortunately I didn't get to see it.

the museum primarily concentrates on operations at Paraparaumu over the years. There is a range of plastic models of civilian and military aircraft, a half-mockup of a CAD F27 main cabin, photographs and a book collection. Every Tuesday at 10.00 the members have a morning tea. Otherwise open hours on sunday.

The problem with those smaller museums is that the original enthusiasts eventually move on or gather other interests and those who follow find that the number of attendees drop off. Why make the effort to give up your Thursday or Sunday afternoon to sit at the front desk at some small museum and find that over the two hours no-one actually calls in to view what is on offer. Eventually, of course, it all falls into the 'too hard' basket and the opening hours are cut back or become abandoned altogether (eg GAPS, Milson). It takes real effort and commitment to maintain this sort of place, and such people are often are (and feel) underappreciated.

To get a museum going ,it's handy it you can hook into the cruise shop circuit, that's what we have done with a farm based museum at Homebush in Canterbury, it's been a bit harder since the earthquakes, and the ships docking at Akaroa, and we lost about twenty groups since the Trans Alpine was disabled due to fires(it started again this week, bout 2 wks ahead of schedule). Our tourists travel travel bus to Chch railway station, half by Trans Alpine to Arthurs Pass, the other half by bus via Homebush, to Arthurs Pass, they all meet up at the Pass, and swop over. isc

I've been there twice during advertised opening hours but both times it was not open.

I hope our Ashburton museum can avoid the worst of those problems for a while longer.
