Hi folks, I am attempting to put together a 3D model of Whenuapai Airbase as it was in mid-1989 for an animation I'm putting together. However finding reference photos of the base at this time is quite tricky, if anyone has any they can let me see, that would be HUGELY appreciated Here's a pic of where I'm at so far... Thanks heaps Lew

Just one minor point - in 1989, 40 Sqdn and their Hercules operated out of No 1 Hangar, and 5 Sqdn with their Orions operated out of No 2 Hangar, so Hercs to the left and Orions to the right.

Hi Lew82 If you do a search on this forum for WHENUAPAI - AUCKLAND AIRPORT 1945-1965, there are some excellent aerial photos of Whenuapai. There's also photos in the 1980s and these might be useful to your project. Good luck!

Me and Beagle were both there in 1989.
There was a large yellow scaffold structure between the two right-most hangars that was used to wash the Boring 727, Hercules and Orion tails.
And palm trees.

Obviously there are a large no of buidings not yet shown - MT yard, Avionics, Police HQ, Base HQ, Stores, TMCC, 40 and 5 Sqdn offices, Tech Wing, Procedure Trainer, Air Movements, Teal Hangar plus other sundry ones. Depends how much detail you want to go to.

What you call the TEAL hangar was the No. 42 Squadron hangar in 1989.

Dave, up until the time I left Whenuapai in November 1981, that hangar was referred to as the Teal hangar by the old school. When I left, it was 1 Squadron (we moved in during August 1978). Likewise No 3 hangar was always PTSU, or occasionally, Ground Equipment.
