Is my memory playing tricks, or was there a radio controlled model car track at Woodbourne between the Camp Pack Up building and the firing range, north of GSTS? I have vague memories of it but I cannot see it on Google Maps satellite view. Was it removed or has my memory been corrupted? I was there in 1989 for the first seven months of the year. Model racing cars were quite popular back then, not sure if they still are, I haven't seen one in years.

As an aside query, does the NZDF own those paddocks surrounding the northern side of the base between what was the GSTS and 4TTS barrcaks complex and the rifle range? Or was that a private farm that has an access road for the military across it?

Yeah I remember it too. Over by the range. Wasn't the Engineering Club over there too?
Is there some way in Google Maps to go back through the years? Like you could on Google Earth.

Thanks for confirming that. You may be right about the Engineering Club.
Not sure about whether you can access older versions of Google Maps.

You can go back in time on the Street View. I am not sure about the other modes. There is a drop down menu on the screen in the top left corner followed by a drop-down menu.

Have no idea if there was ever one on base , but there was definitly one on Jacksons Road ( which virtually boarders the rifle range side of Woodbourne ) Edit : and to answer your question about wether RC cars still exist , yes , in fact its quite popular ( for those that cant think in 3D like us RC fliers ) There is in fact a new club and track here ( possibly the first since the Jacksons road track ) , seems to have a pretty good following .

The car track I remember was around about the area where I have circled in black. Is that where you mean Grant? Jacksons Road is running along the right hand side in this shot.

No , the one I remember was adjacent to Jacksons road , not too far from where that access track meets it ( I never went there , but you could see it from the road as you drove past ) . Sounds like base personal may have built their own track ( quite possible as it was/is a popular hobby ) , but I have no knowledge of that .

I never ever went down that far towards Jacksons Road. The furthest ever ventured was to the rifle range and that was only on official business.
I wonder if the track was moved? I am talking 1989.

I used Jacksons rd every day to cycle to work. One night on the way home after too many at the Cpls Club and a cop pulled me over and gave me a ticket. He said he followed me for a bit watching me go from one side to the other even venturing onto the grass almost hitting the farm fences on each side.

Hahaha, oh Beagle, that's priceless. Did he give you a lift home afterwards? Or make you walk?
