Hello all, I would like some feedback regarding the feasibility of being accepted to the RNZAF as a pilot. Apologies for the long post.
About me:
I am 24 years old, Male and I grew up in New Zealand where I achieved NCEA Level 1, 2, 3 and University entrance with Level 1 and 2 merit endorsed.
Throughout high school I was a member of the local Athletics and Cross country club. In the year following my secondary education, I earned a full scholarship to the University of Texas at Arlington in the US to compete for their Athletics and Cross country teams.
During my five years at University I was a leader on both teams and helped them win multiple team championships. In may I graduated from the school's prestigious engineering program earning a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science. UT Arlington is ABET accredited and a Tier 1 research institute.
I returned in June to New Zealand where I won the New Zealand Cross Championships and I am currently training with the goal of representing New Zealand in future Commonwealth games and Olympics. I am a dual NZ/US citizen.
It would be greatly appreciated if anyone with knowledge of the RNZAF selection process could answer any of my questions:
1. How much does an applicant's NZQA performance affect their chances? In high school I was under the impression you needed top marks to have a chance at becoming a RNZAF pilot. Would the completion of a University degree negate this or would they still solely look at your NZQA grades.
2. I know they test you on and consider your physical fitness during selection. Is the physical component of selection merely a pass/fail baseline test or would an applicant that displays higher levels of fitness improve their chances?
3. I have no prior flight training (outside of many hours on flight sims haha), does this hurt my selection resume?
4. I am 190cm (6'3") tall. Could my height disqualify me? I know the USAF has a 6'5" limit.
5. I understand the process contains psychological and aptitude testing. Would this dwarf all other aspects of selection or is its importance balanced with the other aspects?
6. I read an article recently stating that there is a shortage of pilots both around the world and in New Zealand, could this indicate that that the RNZAF is increasing pilot recruitment.
7. I missed applying for the previous intake in may, the RNZAF careers website has not uploaded any information regarding the next intake. Should I just apply or wait for them to update their information?
Cheers if you read this entire thing.
