It seems the 1949 Miss New Zealand pageant was run by the Air Force Association! I wonder who won this. From the OPUNAKE TIMES, 1 FEBRUARY 1949
MISS N.Z. QUEST
LAUNCHED TODAY
AIR FORCE MEMORIAL
The Miss New Zealand Quest of 1949 was officially launched today and the winner is to be found in time for her to leave on a trip to Britain in July. Differing in only a few respects from the 1947 quest, which was won by Miss Mary Wootton, of Christchurch, this year’s search for the ideal New Zealand girl is being conducted by the Air Force Association whose members are former members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The quest is being used to assist in establishing an Air Force Memorial Fund.
The same dignified standards that characterised the first quest are being maintained this time. The directors emphasise that it is not a “bathing beauty” contest, and photographs of competitors in bathing dress are prohibited.
Four judges will choose the best girls in each district to compete in Wellington for the final honour of being “Miss New Zealand,” The points to be considered by the judges will on beauty and health, education, photogenic possibilities, deportment and personality and sporting qualifications. The winner this year will receive a free trip to Britain and back, a cheque for £200 for her personal expenses on the journey, a complete wardrobe specially designed for her and made of best New Zealand materials, and a screen test at a leading British film studio.
There will be a special prize for the candidate who raises the largest sum of money in the quest, but it is emphasised that all girls will be equal in the judging, irrespective of how much money they have raised.
The seventeen districts are Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Poverty Bay, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Wanganui, Manawatu, Wairarapa, Wellington, Marlborough, Westland, Nelson, Canterbury, South Canterbury, Otago and Southland. Executive Director of the quest is Mr K. W. Kilpatrick, to whose address, Box 3002, Wellington, prospective candidates should apply for full details.
Candidates must be of British parentage, born in New Zealand, never married and between the ages of 18 and 30 inclusive on April 30, the day the entries close.
