When I saw the title of this thread, my first thought was the Lightning of the English Electric variety.
Oh well, one can only but dream, eh?

Love the instructional film on how to fly a P-38. Must have been interesting if the two needed to bail out!!

Hope they have more luck with these than the few they had in WW2,i think they managed to crash all of them within a couple of months.

Lets not forget the other Lightning Australia actually has:

Saratoga, I do not understand your post, do you know something the rest of us bunnies don't? I always imagined that something like 10,000 P-38s were built, and their pilots seemed to think pretty highly of them, as did the military establishment as a whole. Even in WW2, not a large number of military aircraft were built is such numbers, those types produced which exceeded 10,000 copies could probably be counted on the fingers of your two hands (he said without actually doing such a thing!) I think Saratoga was referring to the RAAF operated examples.

Did the Aussies get the normal ones with conter rotating props, or the ones ordered by Britain for the RAF with both props rotating in the same direction, Lockheed did warn themagainst the idea as it would cause handling problems. isc

Yep, the RAAF ones. Always wondered why they weren't taken up in more numbers by the RAAF, but likely weren't offered anything but used ones and the Mosquito took over the PR role as such.

Saratoga, Very sorry for my rather rude response to your original comment, could not see the connection with the RAAF for looking. However having undertaken another look, can still not find any connection between these three aircraft and the RAAF, so perhaps you might understand how I could be confused on this particular point. Nevertheless, bad response on my part. David D

RAAF operated more P-38s than were actually allocated RAAF serials
