Can anyone provide details of the service history/fate of Harvard NZ917?. ADF serials seems to be at odds with some photos i have seen of crash salvage. Specifically salvaged and being transported by barge in possibly the Marlborough sounds area.

Are you sure the photos you saw were of NZ917? There were a number of other Harvards that crashed into the sea around the sounds.

Yes, b&w images,WW2 camouflage, it had 17 on the cowl, and 17 on the side panel(yellow panel over camouflage),series of 3 photos first showing crashed, upside down in what looked like pasture in a valley, the next 2 showing loading(rocky beach) and transporting on the barge(small island in background, surrounded by 'sounds like hills),wings removed and stowed beside. One of the barge shots showed the tail serial in full. I will see if i can get a copy of them, they were quite small prints,about2"x3",but clear.not sure if I can post them 'cause i don't use non website hosting.

I have also noticed this discrepancy.
I have images, taken by my father who was at Woodbourne in WW2, of NZ917 being loaded onto the barge which are at odds with the record (from ASN) that said it crashed and burned.
I also have several images in the same envelope of the recovery of burnt out remains, as referred to in the record of 917. The airframe looks like it has an open dual cockpit and therefore couldn't be a Harvard, as is the 917. The tail profile is also different from a Harvard.
I am happy to share these images.

Further to this discrepancy, I copy and paste another posting here: From: rnzaf.proboards.com/thread/17601/harvard-pile?page=25"NZ917 Mk II 66-2710 Issued to NZ under Empire Air Training Scheme. Shipped to New Zealand on "Limerick" in May 1941 and assembled at Hobsonville. BOC 20 May 1941. To No.1 SFTS Wigram. To No.2 SFTS Woodbourne. Crashed and burned at Woodbourne during training flight at 0040 hours on 09 April 1943. The aircraft climbed to 200 feet after takeoff and then turned and dived into the ground. LAC Ralph Brownlie killed. Written off books at Woodbourne 11 May 1943. NZ917 31-Dec 1942 Woodbourne Forced landing NZ917 9-Apr 1943 Woodbourne Crashed, night, 1 dead" The crash salvage of NZ917 onto the barge may be the 31 Dec 1942 event, referred to above. That it was salvageable, as appears in the images, is consistent with 'forced landing' rather than crash with remains written off.
