Interesting comments. I remember rigging the control system on Freighters at least twice after Check 12 servicings (Major overhauls} and the only difference to normal flight control system was the trim tabs were a spring tab system. Otherwise the system was a normal cable, pushrod and bellcrank system. At Woodbourne the complete A/C could not fit into the hangar so the rear end sat outside with a cutout fitted in the space when the hangar doors were closed either side of the fuselage. This meant that the external control locks were fitted. I spent many hour working in a Freighter cockpit and am pretty sure that the controls were not full and free with the locks fitted but a small amount of movement occurred which operated the spring loaded trim tabs. If I remember correctly the control column operated the trim tabs which in turn aerodynamically moved the control surface. Help Me Shorty, Marty, Al or any of you B170 specialists.

Pretty sure that attempting take off with control locks in led to C-47 NZ3529 swerving off the runway at Pallikalu on 6-7-45 and being written off amongst the shrubbery

Strange that, the discussion went from it was unlikely because it was not possible, to yes it did, on more than one occasion also.
