Maybe it was not the aeroplanes they were after bringing down from the Pacific. Maybe they were packed with some sort of illicit booty?

I came across this from New Zealand Wings which I scanned for someone else years ago and realised it has one of the Tonga P-40's in it, although not much is seen.

Relating to the Tongan P-40E's, though later in their service when they were at Espiritu Santo... This is a well known RNZAF Official photo on NZ3094 at Santo: But just now I spotted this photo posted to Facebook and mistakenly credited as being a Curtiss PR shot taken in Rangoon. It's clearly two RNZAF P-40's being serviced with the wing of a P-40 with US markings but possibly still from an ex-Tonga RNZAF example in the foreground. I've never seen this shot before and it's terrific to see another from Santo of the ex-Tonga P-40E's. The one on the right seems to have 19 on the cowl. This is not NZ3072, it is the ex-Tonga Santo '19' who's serial is unknown.
