Greetings, do you have any shots of freighters on the ground in SVN? The Aviation Historical Society is currently running the history of the freighter in its Journal.
cheers

Well Dave I've only just stumbled across this site and really have no idea out to upload photos to it. Where is your email listed ?
To the other gent re freighter photos, well I only have one of the underside of part of the wing looking at the Saigon terminal. Had to be careful on the ground with a camera !

Uploading photos is a little tricky and requires a third-party hosting site like Flickr. I am happy to help if you'd like, you can email the scans tome at dave_daasnz@hotmail.com and I will post them here.

OK, here are 'baggy's first lot of photos, with his captions: Two of the Hong Kong Airport [Kaitak] approach. Two of the 14 Sqn detach. camp at Gong Kedah-Malaysia. One of the 14 Sqn softball team at RAF Tengah One at RAAF Butterworth ,showing 14 Sqn personnel in front of a RCAF Shackleton, on its around the world farewell tour. All taken 1965/1966. Actually, that is not a Shackleton, that is the ex-French Navy Lancaster on its way to England I think - now known as 'Just Jane', at East Kirkby.

Can anyone put names to any of these characters? I wonder if Shorty or 14liney recognise any of these chaps?

I have tried repeatedly to get that runway shot up the right way but it keeps loading upside-down. Frustrating.
But if you right click and hit Open Image in New Tab, it opens the correct way up.

A great collection. When I visited Ho Chi Min City (Saigon) in 1998 the revetments at Tan Son Nhut were all still in place and there were various US aircraft relics in some of them

That looks like a whole bunch of C-180s or 185s (VNAF U-17s?) parked on the flightline in front of the hangars. Did the USAF also use them, perhaps alongside the O-1 or Porter?

The last few pics may be of Nha Trang air base. The pic of the Huey, dead centre, definitely is. Nha Trang 1965

I think that is Jack Rangiuia third from left and Barry Thurston third from right in the Lancaster photo. Could be Bill Grey front row third from right in the ball team. Couple of others look familiar but I can’t put a name to them.

In the softball team photo in front of the Canberra, back right in uniform is armourer Tom Attwood. I agree with the names Barry Thurston, Jack Rangiwai (? spelling) and probably Bill Grey (photographer?) in the photos. Other faces are familiar but it's been too many years to dig out more names.

Another batch of photos from Tony: "Hello Dave, I have included a WW2 map of the Malay Peninsula showing location of all the wartime airfields, just for info. The one trailing all the smoke was an 'Air America' in a hurry. Happy campers ,Gong Kedah. The last one, Tidy Kiwis - 14 Sqn barracks. Regards, Tony"
