Nha Trang would have been the Vietnamese equivalent of Wigram at that time. A training base for the pilots and in a reasonably 'safe' part of the country. The Cessna's parked there and the dias helped me determine the possible bases and then the hills in the background just confirmed it. There was another bigger base just down the road at Cam Ranh Bay plus another up the coast at Quy Nhon. I think it may be possible you may have visited one of them also.

Another batch of photos from Tony: If this is South Vietnam those could be RAAF Canberra's in the foreground

Look at all those Douglas aircraft with round engines.
That's what I call REAL aeroplanes.

The latest installment: "Hello Dave, getting near the end. Just a few of 41 Sqn Changi to come. The last one of this lot of Bugis street in Singapore will no doubt bring back a few memories. I don't ever recall it looking as grotty as that. But I do recall one of our drivers taking the Sqn. 5 tonner down there. That caused great consternation ! Anyway that photo is not one of mine so you may not wish to have it displayed. Tony" I'll add it anyway. If anyone else lays claim to it, let me know. 14 Squadron with the Singapore All Stars Ron in Penang Rochor canal, Singapore 1966 Changi village 1966 Bugis Street (taken by unknown) The same spot in 2017, one building left

"Hello Dave, these are the last at this stage, I do have some others but finding them is not easy ! The last one of the F-4 on liftoff is pretty dirty and I just didn't have the enthusiasm to sit down and spend 3-4 hours cleaning it. Interesting about that shot of the Copter discharging the Gov general---there is a Lancaster [not a Shackleton !] parked on the line along from the 170's. I have no other shots of it, perhaps on the roll that was lost, but it must have been considered nothing special at the time. Like when we landed at Guam one time in our old Hastings, parked up near the B52's, time may coloured my thinking here, but I'm sure one of the Yanks said "goddamn you guys trying to prove the Wright brothers weren't the first". But I think that's just a good story. Anyway, thanks for getting all the photos up for me, no doubt someone out there will appreciate them. Regards, Tony" Well I certainly do Tony, thanks for sharing them!Changi The Governor General drops in to No. 41 Squadron RNZAF Sir Bernard Fergusson dropping in to No. 41 Squadron RNZAF Kaitak Airport in 1966 Kaitak with B170 wing F-4 Phantom lifting off

That is a Shackleton Mk. 2 with the B,170s, Whirlwinds and Landrover - no Lancaster there I'm afraid! David D

Nice try Tony, but that's 2 out of 2 misses! I hope someone was holding on to the wide-open Freighter nose doors while that chopper was chewing up the adjacent sky!
Great pics by the way! Big thank you for sharing with us

I agree with johnnyfalcon, these are marvellous period pieces, the Board could well benefit from more of this type of photography. David D

Another batch of photos from Tony: If this is South Vietnam those could be RAAF Canberra's in the foreground I think they are USAF B-57's. You can just see the long canopies on them.

They are indeed B-57's according to the label on the picture.

Kaitak Airport in 1966
I suspect the photograph captioned as above (Kaitak in 1966) is actually Paya Lebar. (Singapore) would appreciate another opinion.

Re the 1966 Kaitak photo, I think the "B170" wing might in fact be a Hastings wing. Also seems to have an underwing tank visible. David D

Paya Lebar, international operations commenced there officially in 1955, transferred to RSAF in 1980 when Changi commenced operations. From 1981 solely for military use.(In the late 60's remnants of the aerodrome it replaced, Kallang, could be sighted close to the S coast of Singapore.) My end to minor thread hijack.
