Have no fear, on RNZ National tonight a secret song will be played mobilising the Home Guard to protect our shores. An advantage of the aging population that has been missed is the growth of Home Guard recruits. They are experts at camouflage, so much so I would be surprised if you can even spot them patrolling the beaches

So we are now officially Frigate-less! Hope a war doesn't break out in the meantime ;+) Basically... yes we are frigateless if that is a word... No worries, the RAN has your backs. I just checked out the window at work and a couple of modded up ANZAC'S an FFG and a DDG here. Any pics of Te Kaha?

Wonder when the upgraded frigate will break cover? Would have thought they would aim to sail the modded one out when no2 went in.

Interesting but got too tech for me. Decoys are pretty fascinating and that floating one is something else. Wonder if Nulka was ever considered for the RNZN?

So when does MoD plan to start the search for a new frigate? EDIT: Apparently the "Initial Business Case" is supposed to be this year and decisions happening in 2026. Is that when the competition for a ship design starts?

Nighthawknz, that's just like the pollies over here on a totally unrelated subject of Sydney's desalination plant. Had it been down to most of them we would have been having spiders crawling out of the taps before a decision was made.....

Further to my last..........heard this morning that HMAS Perth, one of those upgraded, has been in dry dock for two years after refurb as the Ryal Australian Navy cannot field a crew to man her.. What the ?

Wait til you massively expand your sub fleet, and can't man it either! I assume the reason that the upgraded frigate is the one out of service is then the RAN doesn't have to train a crew on new systems.

What the ? I’m pretty sure Arunta was the first to have the mid life upgrade completed late last year, so Perth is either waiting for or in the process of being upgraded. Perhaps the journo is talking about the ASMD upgrade that was completed years back?

What the ? Geez how easy is it for the media to have a whinge. Any casual observation of the RAN website shows they have LHDs, subs and frigates spread over the Indian (with the French navy) Pacific (Guam) and SE Asia. At same time the AWDs are building up. If one boat can’t be manned during that level of activity maybe it’s not so bad. Also interesting and timely is the arrival of a task group of Chinese PLA ships in Sydney. Caused quite a stir.

Any idea why they removed the 2nd MK41 VLS module? Is it to ensure no future government ever decides to buy some longer range missiles?
