FLICKS REVIEW Liam-Maguren BY LIAM MAGUREN FLICKS WRITER
Feeling heavily enlightened and emotionally shattered during Sir Peter Jackson's They Shall Not Grow Old, I grew to realise a potential double meaning behind the film's title. It's a line from Robert Laurence Binyon's poem For the Fallen which, when used here, reflects the colossal restoration and colouring efforts put in place to house the memories of those who gave their lives to The Great War. It's also a stark reminder of the youth that was robbed of these men.... MORE
THE PEOPLES' REVIEWS YOUR RATING & REVIEW RATE / REVIEW THIS MOVIE THE PRESS REVIEWS THE INDEPENDENT (UK)
You might have thought there was nothing new to say about the First World War but Peter Jackson's astonishing and revelatory new feature documentary comes at the subject in a way no previous film, book or play has ever done. FULL REVIEW
THE TELEGRAPH (UK)
It is an encounter with the past that feels exhilaratingly present-tense. FULL REVIEW
VARIETY (USA) Perhaps surprisingly, with a blockbuster merchant at the helm, little here is rousing or sentimental; the film's mordant intimacy of perspective endures as stoically as the speakers themselves. FULL REVIEW
HOLLYWOOD REPORTER Nothing feels too sentimentalised or sanitised, but nor is it sensationalised for extra shock value either. These are the true accounts of survivors, after all, mostly talking decades after the events and grateful to be alive. FULL REVIEW

Have you got a viewing sorted out Johnny? I have booked (and paid) for the Westport viewing. Solo effort.

Been there, done that. I thought it was very well done. A plus is being a Senior Citizen and getting discounted admission, downside is falling asleep when the lights dim. Full house, turning people away at the door. Promise of another screening but no idea of dates.

Nearly a full house at our screening too - brilliant, thoroughly enjoyed it and it was an education for my lads.

So thrilled Tonight we went to see 'They shall not grow old' which was amazing. But equally amazing was to hear granddad's voice used in part of the narrative and to see his name in the credits! I'd forgotten that you'd mentioned this, so had a bit of a double-take when watching the credits and seeing the name. Definitely some shocking footage, which would be confronting even in B&W.

I'm on my way to see it now. Will there be a piano up front for the national anthem?

Don't ask me, I feel terrible about it. I must have dozed off as soon as the lights dimmed, missed standing for the Queen and even worse, the cartoons.
Saw most of the feature I think though. The noise of the guns kept waking me.

I just went to see They Shall Not Grow Old at the Tivoli in Cambridge. Utterly speechless. Even without the added colour it would be the best documentary I have seen on World War One, because it is all just the veterans telling the story, not a historian, not a narrator, not a presenter. It's first hand, it's raw, and it's honest. The added colour however helps to bring it to life, makes it far more immediate and real. Not every piece of footage is perfectly coloured but it is perfectly chosen to show what the veterans are talking about. Utterly amazing film. You need to see it, and to take others, including young people 16 and over.

This made US$2.3m on the one day (17 Dec) in the US. That was two showings in 1122 cinemas.
There will be another two showings on 27 Dec, but in only 800 cinemas.
Warner Brothers have picked up the global rights and plan larger releases in Feb 2019.

I went on Sunday at Te Awamutu Regent. Outstanding. It was also essential to stay to the very end of the credits to hear all of the verses of the closing song.
