Does anyone know why in the March 1952 when No. 75 Squadron's Mosquitoes deployed to Kaitaia for some weeks that it was known as Operation Hardtack?
I mean most training deployments are known as "Exercise XXXX", but this one was "Operation Hardtack".
And the prefix 'Operation' is usually only associated with something that is 'real' and the squadron is working under actual operational conditions rather than simulated; such as peacekeeping deployments, actual war or something like the police cannabis raids.
I cannot think of any other RNZAF exercises that were known as Operation, and I cannot think of any reasons why this exercise was considered an operation. Was there something going on that is not immediately obvious, such as a Soviet submarine poking around?

The only "Operation Hardtack" I know of, and can find online with my very extensive "1 minute 35 search"... is The Yanks and The Brits doing the nuke tests... Grappling with the Bomb PDF
but that was in like the mid 50's not the early 50's? Google search

I do wonder if it had something to do with a potential deployment to the Malaya Emergency as around that time the RNZAF was considering establishing expeditionary elements designed to flesh out Commonwealth air force elements in Malaya/Singapore.
