Okay everyone, want your input. Have had a number of conversations over the past year with industry people asking me if I would consider publishing a high quality publication covering aviation here in NZ. As many of you know I own and publish HeliOps, HeliOps Frontline and now Air Attack (new global aerial fire fighting magazine), while these are global publications I still have a great interest in aviation here in NZ, still get out shooting when I can. I notice that the other newspaper type publications out there dont really have the type of coverage that Wings had back in the day. When I wrote for Ross McPherson and then Callum it would cover all segments of the industry, much of which I feel is being left out in the current publications. My question to all members here, is do you think we should bring NZ Wings back, have got all the bits in place to make it a reality but wanted to get input from members here. The only sector we wouldn't cover is the warbird and vintage aircraft sector because my great friend Graham Orphan has Classic Wings magazine and that covers it extensively. So what are your thoughts regards Neville 'Ned' Dawson

Would be good. I stopped reading Wings in the 2000's....It seemed to be trying to be like Flight International. I gave up after seeing a huge article on Yemen Airways buying 5 x A310!

Yes! I was a subscriber for years but it did seem to veer away from the "NZ" bit in the title whereas Classic Wings seemed to fill the gap (for the Classic vintage warbird side of things anyway.). I think we do need something covering all aspects of NZ Aviation like NZ Wings used to do.

I too was a subscriber from way back in the 1970s, but when the magazine veered away from the New Zealand scene, I dropped it.
I am all for an NZ Wings come-back and would gladly subscribe again.

So long as it sticks to New Zealand and not cover unrelated overseas stories (which like others here I feel killed the magazine for me as I had no interest in most of the foreign stuff).
BTW, I have just taken over editing one of the four NZ aviation magazines currently available in shops, Sport Flying.

If I proceed with a relaunch then I can assure you EVERYTHING will be either here in NZ or involving a Kiwi overseas. Its called NZ Wings for a reason.

.I'm another of those who dropped Pacific Wings when it veered off the "local" track. In later issues, it was rare to find a New Zealand related article. I certainly would look forward to seeing a revival.

Big YES from me Ned! You could start with a write up on what our old A-4s are doing with Draken. ;+)

I only subscribe to Classic Wings and occasionally buy Aeroplane or Flypast if there's enough in there for me. I think I'd subscribe to NZ Wings. A great idea.

Bear in mind that the market is a lot more crowded now. The 'news updates' can now be viewed on the internet almost as events happen. People no longer need or want to wait a couple of months to see the latest in ink on paper. Other publications have also moved into what was Wings territory - Classic Wings (as you have already indicated) and, most obviously, NZ Aviation News has gone upmarket.
What can a new (as in resurrected) publication offer that is not currently already available elsewhere?
I would say it would be an uphill battle to reclaim that lost market share.

You say NZ Aviation News is "Upmarket" - Really

And considering what I have seen in NZ Aviation News and Kiwi Flyer about what they do cover and dont cover I disagree about it being an uphill battle, thats why many existing advertisers in some of these publications have asked me to look at doing the mag, and also many other advertisers who arent even in the other mags.

It might be helpful to define 'many', ie is this simply based on anecdotal comment or have the numbers been thoroughly researched and found to be substantial as well as the willingness to put money where the mouth is when push comes to shove? A Yes from me. I kept a subscription right to the end and renewed just before the last magazine came out. With 20/20 aftervision, I should have stopped when it became difficult to find any New Zealand content

All fair comments , then you also have Aero Historian claiming the "serious " historical niche , and yet in this crowded market Defense News seems to be continuing but probably depending on the big manufacturers adverts to make ends meet. If the reborn NZ Wings had must have content , I would buy the issues of interest.

Hi Kiwined I wrote for NZ Wings and then Pacific Wings for over 30 years and I witnessed its slow decline and then demise after the editor stopped paying contributors. If you are going to resurrect Wings magazine then you need to be prepared to pay for the content. Cheers, Madmax

WOW really, I would never have guessed. Having published my own magazines for over 15 years we have always paid contributors. And I am assuming you are talking about owners other than Ross or Rob because as far as I know they were two of the most honest publishers around.
