The entrance to the airport was different back then. The road came from Carters Beach and continued past the front of the Golf Club-rooms somehow. I haven't seen any pics so am having trouble visualizing. The trees would have been along the golf club boundary, probably immediately behind the photographer. I see from my previous comment that he said all three were blown into the trees.
They would have been pine or macrocarpa, probably the later if they withstood the winds.

Another update from Mark McGuire: Hi Dave I came across this White's Aviation photo at MOTAT that shows Westport as would have been around the time of the accident. collection.motat.org.nz/objects/94551It's also on the National Library site but as a mirror image. Regards Mark McGuire
