Yes, it looks like a certain RV-4...really sad start to summer aviation, reminiscent of the Northland crash last summer, almost 1 year ago. Sympathies, and thoughts of comfort for the bereaved

I had done a bit of detective work and figured out the registration by judicious Google image searching on what I could see from the previous long-range photos. Of some concern is this quote from NZ CivAir Blog about RV-4s of NZ"Its registration was changed to ZK-JRX on 11/7/03 and it has been active around the South Island. Most recently it suffered power failure on long finals to Queenstown and made a heavy landing on a beach. I guess that makes it the most incident prone RV 4"
