75 Years Ago today one of the most incredible low level pinpoint raids by aircraft was undertaken when Mosquitoes of No. 487 (NZ) Squadron, No. 464 Squadron RAAF, and No. 21 Squadron RAF, escorted by Hawker Typhoons from No. 198 Squadron RAF and No. 174 Squadron RAF bombed the walls of the Amiens Prison in France. The Gestapo had hundreds of Resistance workers as prisoners within and the Mosquitoes breached the walls to aid in their escape. Five years ago The Wings Over New Zealand Show made its first international episode when we recorded commemorative ceremonies at former RAF Hunsdon where the Mosquitoes were based, and in Amiens in France, and here in Cambridge where one of the four airmen who were killed that day, Dick Sampson, was from. This year for the 75th there are no commemorations but you can still listen to the 70th Anniversary being marked here on the WONZ Show www.cambridgeairforce.org.nz/WONZShow/2014/03/episode-62-the-amiens-prison-raid-70th-anniversary-special/
