I think a few WW2 Luftwaffe pilots did the same years back...

One thing that strikes me as odd, as the crew believed they were meant to be heading to Edinburgh, did hey not announce before or just after take off "Welcome to this flight to Edinburgh, Scotland"? The passengers who were all under the belief they were heading to Dusseldorf would have twigged then that something was amiss.

Maybe a lot of non-English speakers on board, or just didn't take any notice?

Or a typical aircraft PA system where you can't distinguish a single thing that is said!

Shows how much we pay to pre flight briefings and announcements.

There is a joke somewhere about a British pilot that's got himself a bit lost on a German taxi way, and the tower asking him if he had been there before, and the reply yes twice in 1945, but it was night time and I didn't land. isc

My father related the story of a Fiesler Storch landing at RAF Detling in Kent when he was stationed there during Battle of Britain. The German pilot was most pissed off as he was caught in strong winds during a flight over the English Channel and was unable to return to France so had to find an RAF field in the dark. I think he said the flare path had been lit for an aircraft returning from a coastal patrol.
