Hudsons disposed of from Taieri were: NZ2010 to Mr Caley NZ2013 to Mr James Clark (now at Wigram) NZ2016 to Mr Edwards NZ2031 to Mr Carr (now at MOTAT) NZ2039 to Mr Edwards NZ2089 to Mr Edwards Two were saved that have ended up in museums, and there have been posts on the forum of two separate Hudson caravans in the south of the South Island that may be also from the other four. The wing centre sections of NZ2039 (which ended up on the farm of Angus Cameron at Dunback) were saved and are now fitted to NZ2035 at Ferrymead. Our guys also recovered an outer wing (and sundry smaller bits), but I'm not sure if it's one of the two that were kept or one that went on to another project.

Dave, When I have my study in acceptable state and can move the filing cabinets there from the lounge room I shall do an extended search. I remember looking around the sheds like it was yesterday. So glad that it did not happen and I have seen the aircraft at Wigram. Far better place for it but yes, I have to admit, it nearly wasn't and it would have been down to me. mea culpa.......

And.....another thing that is vivid in my memory....in Timaru I had the very best fish and chips I have ever eaten. Still remember them.

Is anyone out there able to identify the Hudson cabin section at Ohakea? Could it possibly be one of those on the list above?

Most unlikely, it's a long way from Dunedin to the Manawatu

Was the Hudson fuselage the one that was at Asplin's yard behind a shed for many years. I can remember taking a photo of one there in the late 1960s

There were two Hudson fuselages still at Asplin's place right up till the 1970's I believe. One was NZ2084, the other's identity is not know but it will likely be the one that ended up as a section at Waihi, and went to Ohakea - and now - no idea where it ended up when the museum closed.

At least one of those fuselages was used in the underwater film set of the “Sea Urchins” TV series in the early 1980’s, off one of the ocean beaches on the east coast, north of Auckland. Before filming was completed a major storm blew through and broke it up and other parts were strewn about. They put it roughly back together to continue. Afterwards, as a condition of the permit all the debris had to be removed. They donated the remains to MOTAT. The fuselage was split open and badly scored by the sand and rocks. Along with it were other parts they got from Asplins, engine mounts and a pile of flaps. The flaps had been punctured so they would sink and had completely choked up with sand afterwards. I remember back in the ‘80s trying to flush some of them out, no success. As well they'd been given a liberal painted on coating of artificial sea-life to give them that aged look. Most of those pieces were passed south in the 1990’s, either to Ferrymead or Wigram. I’m not sure if any of the fuselage was saved.

Yes that was the remains of NZ2084 that went to Wigram. When NZ2013 was being restored while I was based there in 1991-93, the fuselage of NZ2084 with it's bottom missing so it sat flat in the floor was there next to it and was used I believe as a reference and a parts source for fittings. It was later disposed of, sold to Nigel Wilcox, who still owns it as far as I am aware.

The two fuselages at Asplins for a long time sat side by side alongside the building noses to the street. I saw them there whilst on a roadie with some guys from Ferrymead Railway so my knowing them etc would place it as late 1970s.
Both still bore their individual ID letter and if memory serves me correctly they were both high alphabet letters X and Y immediately ring a bell perhaps Dave Duxbury can comment.

Hudson NZ2080 was the Hudson sent to a little South Canterbury town (Lyndhurst ring a bell with anyone?) towards the coast from Ashburton, which supposedly ended its life as a caravan. Ferrymead ended up with windscreen assembly plus some of top of the nose I think, and maybe also a portion of the rear fuselage. This aircraft was also noticeably in its original factory camouflage as I recall, no sign of any blue/grey on this one that I could see. I was on this FAS expedition too. I believe 2080 spent much of its operational life with 1 Squadron (Whenuapai), don't believe it served overseas. It also became INST 115 at the Electrical & Wireless School at Wigram after war, so is almost certainly the aircraft listed in the above Tender notices under number 3387. Was definitely still marked with its Lockheed serial number on nose, and the letter "T" (it's individual letter with 1 Squadron). I made some colour scheme/markings notes of the remains of this aircraft which have proved most useful. Are any of these bits still stashed away at Ferrymead Denys? I also (somewhere) have some further notes on the markings of NZ2084, the one from Rukuhia, including the individual fuselage code letter. David D

Hi David,
The windscreen assembly hangs on the wall above my work bench, now sans some small fittings I had need of for 2035.
I don't recall any rear fuselage bits however it may be that they were amongst general tail area pieces (fin-stabiliser sets which if memory serves me correct came from the Holdaways several years after we got the fuselage and wings from there) that we passed to Wigram,.

I was talking to Nigel Wilcox earlier this evening and asked him about his Hudson. He still has it in its disassembled state (which was necessary to remove it from the Aviators Gallery )and is looking to start putting it together in a couple of months time.

Does anyone think that there may be any "spares" out there like a ventral turret or bits and astrodome?
