I visited "Dangerous Skies" yesterday. Where do I start...? First, congratulations to the Mosquito preservation team! What a beautiful presentation. A great balance of fresh, but not pristine. She looks operational. I stood in her shadow and spell for half an hour and just absorbed the history, story, beauty and presence. The legend lives!
However, I was torn completely down the middle emotionally, for while I savoured the experience, "Steadfast" followed by "Full Noise" tore up the sky overhead and beat the hell out of Omaka airfield. Their engines' roars reverberating through the roof of the museum, taunting and tempting me outside. Torture. Sweet and bitter. Pleasure and pain...
No access to Gloria, who was still at the Saunders' hangar. Disappointing. But, wow, the Hudson diorama was exceptional!
Spitfire had its top cowls off and no propeller, which makes me ask if she'd been available had the show gone ahead. I had my first up-close (under its wing) look at the FW190, standing staunch and confrontational, and the impressively-realistic Stuka, pouncing from on high like a demented Eagle. The Yak-3 was outside being belligerent, which left Lydia standing conspicuously solitary.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was the audio-visual theatre experience, spotlighting the carnage of Stalingrad. Unexpected but exceptional! Thoroughly recommend its realistic, educational, yet tasteful message.
So, while only a small collection compared with NZs other houses, John Smith's contributions along with well-thought-out displays make this a bucket-list must-see.
Been there, got the T-shirt (and hat)

No access to Gloria, who was still at the Saunders' hangar. The hangar doors were open when I was there so I grabbed a snap from the car park for you. Been there, got the T-shirt (and hat) Got my John Smith mosquito t-shirt! Will wear it to the next airshow I attend.

So amazing. The Foliage green and blue underside have faded away almost completely to show the original olive drab and medium green blotches and neutral grey and the original white roundel bars plus where the fuselage white ID strips had extended further. That would be what the P-40 wore before being repainted. The darker green patches on the fuselage are the Foliage green. They were probably B.A.L.M paints that were variable and didn't last as long. The letters FE-D were Sky and were applied following it's repaint.

And let's not forget the amazing Mosquito. This is from Thursday when Al Marshal, Gavin Conroy, Deane Baunton and others were finishing her off for the display, and the house lights were all on rather than the coloured mood lights, so I took the opportunity to get some shots. I wholeheartedly echo the previous comments, fantastic shots and thank you for sharing, Dave. I'm afraid you will have a lot of Flickr notifications thanks to my enthusiastic Favouriting of many photos.
Wow. What an amazing time. I'm in awe of how far these two projects have come along in the time they have.
Can anyone provide any updates on Tiger Moth NZ1467/ZK-BQB?
