I don't think it quite works like that, i'm pretty sure we don't just say "We'll send over 3 choppers for you". It would have been more along the lines of "What capability can we provide to assist you?". Noting also that the RSAF offered Chinooks(also operated by the ADF), also accepted. If nothing else it will free up ADF assets for any further emergency situations.

Obviously, they asked for the NH-90 so we offered 3 of them." I know it's not exactly like that but as you say "What capability can we provide to assist you?" I was also going to mention the RSAF Chinooks but I would probably start ranting so I quit... lol

The RAAF has been using their P-8A Poseidons to assess highways used for evacuation and other critical infrastructure during Op Bushfire Assist. A powerful sensor and comms suite is useful for more than just hunting ships & subs. Pics: Sgt Murray Staff pbs.twimg.com/media/ENw6BhkWoAAP9NV.jpg

Jeez, how nice would it be to have our own C-17s. I wonder what the likelihood of some second hand ones from the US would be.
Giant military cat might be useful too.

Condition?

At around 1600hrs this afternoon, a contract helicopter working for the NSW RFS ditched into a dam on the Far South Coast. The aircraft remains submerged. The pilot was able to free himself from the aircraft and is safetly onshore. Ambulance are responding.

True fame for our support! Could have at least trained the giant cat to push the NH-90 onboard... ;-)

Some context on loss rate
Yeah. 700 aircraft doing 12 hour days clock up 8400 hours per day. They’re more than 2 months in now, so let’s say they’re approaching half a million hours? The ag flying rate is maybe 5 or 6 accidents per 100,000hrs, and they’re conducting pretty hazardous ops.

a contract helicopter working for the NSW RFS ditched into a dam on the Far South Coast. For those who do not know, in Australia a 'dam' is a pond. There is usually no dam as the rest of the world knows it involved and usually no flowing water as you'd expect with an actual dammed lake/pond. One of the quaint things I learned on the Wings Over Australia tour.

i.stuff.co.nz/national/118724757/nzdf-sends-health-teams-and-chaplain-to-help-fight-australian-bushfiresThe New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is sending an environmental health team, a primary health care team and a chaplain to help battle bushfires in Australia. The health care team would relieve an Australian Defence Force (ADF) team providing medical support to troops, while the environmental health team would work with NZDF combat engineers to monitor conditions and assess risks to personnel, Defence Minister Ron Mark said on Friday. The latest contingent would travel to Kangaroo Island in South Australia on Saturday, bringing the number of NZDF personnel supporting the ADF to 112. The NZDF is also operating a C-130 aircraft, crew and support team out of Richmond Air Force base near Sydney, and two air load teams supporting tasks throughout Australia.

news.defence.gov.au/national/eyes-sky-heaven-sentA Royal Australian Air Force P-8A Poseidon is being used daily to provide vital information to firefighting crews on the ground as part of Operation Bushfire Assist. Operating out of RAAF Base Edinburgh, the crews from No. 11 Squadron are flying eight hours a day and conducting aerial surveillance of infrastructure and roads in the fire-affected areas in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia’s Kangaroo Island. Wing Commander James Wright is in charge of P-8A operations and planning and said the crews had also been capturing imagery which had been passed onto authorities on the ground ...

Not wanting to belittle the contribution of the NH-90 im glad to have your help, but wouldn't it have been easier for the Kiwi crews to fly Australian Taipans, after all most are complaining the bushfires are climate change induced, this would actually save a return trip of the C17 for the Kiwi helicopters. As too the RSAF CH-47 we actually only have a limited number of those and more the merrier I say its one area the ADF should be expanding more I believe, im also lead to believe the RSAF CH-47 were already in Australia as they are already based here for training www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/australia-fires-saf-rsaf-chinooks-mindef-ng-eng-hen-bushfires-12239798#cxrecs_s But a big thank you for all the help we can get
