From NZ Teletext tonight
Jets To Patrol Melbourne Skies Jet fighters and Black Hawk helicopters could be authorised to shoot "rogue" aircraft out of the skies of Melbourne during next year's Commonwealth Games.
Victoria Police has released some details of it's security plan 100 days ahead of the March 15 opening ceremony.
An exclusion zone will span a 75km radius from the games' main athletics venue, the MCG.

When the President of the Republic of Texas, George W. Bush, came to Canberra in 2003 there were always at least two Hornets circling over the city from 9.30pm Wednesday until 6pm Thursday to enforce a 90km exclusion zone around the city. The RAAF deployed six Hornets to Nowra in support of this operation, and they flew to and from Canberra on hourly changeovers. There some very tired people around Canberra on Thursday, after a sleepless night of listening to Hornets cruising around at 5000ft above the city all night long. I thought it was great though, and at one point I lay out on the lawn just to watch them fly racetrack patterns for about half an hour! Poor Melbourne; I wonder if they know what they may be in for? Although, I guess it may not be quite so bad for them as I doubt whether the Hornets would have to be in the air all through the day and night.

I can imagine it was pretty noisy in Nowra over that same period, as we all know that a Hornet taking off is a hell of a lot louder than one cruising around at 5000 ft. In fact I pointed that out to several people who were complaining about the noise here that we were much better off than Nowra. I'd hate to see how much that whole operation cost!
