Ta Dave.
Any questions about their time at Nationwide Air I will endevour to answer. My best memory was a missed approach around the harbour at about 500ft altitude. Reminded me of the DC-7 which did pylon racing at Reno. The sensation of speed at low altitude with four P&WR2000s was intoxicating. I have posted to a Carvair site run by Paul and Anja Spike about Nationwide.
It is time NWB was restored for one last flight to a museum. Hopefully here. These old ladies are too precious to be flying into tundra strips. That was the fate of a former NZ Bristol Freighter flown into Bronson Creek Gold Mine by Hawk Air, Canada. Squashed!
Nationwide was seeking to use the cabin in the hump for passengers but NZ CAA wouldn't allow it. The owner late Matt Thompson would not consider a cabin at the rear for pax a la BAF style. Incidentally a Carvair pilot could fly the DC-4 but not the other way around.
We had one approach to WLG Rnwy34 when a gust hit us from the west lifting the Port wing. IT took full aileron and both pilots straining for over twenty seconds to lift the starboard wing. There is a nasty cliff on the starboard side to that approach and we examined it in some detail that day.
Another day we left Nelson and the hydraulic reservoir in the cockpit hump began spewing hydraulic fluid. We flew flights to Nelson, Christchurch and Auckland, but mostly just to Woodburne. The majority of cargo was NZ assembled cars. Matt Thompson had started the Car Haulways Group operating car transporters.

That's some neat footage, I'd never seen one in the air before. Very ugly and ungainly, but nevertheless charming.

Is this one of the old birds that sat around at NSN airport for (what seemed like) years?

Conflicting reports to hand on Carvair 9J-PAA (ex ZK-NWB), currently at Johannesburg. Some say scrapping is imminent, but another states "a person, from there has mailed the owners, re scrapping, their reply denies this, saying they are busy with other projects, and have no time to spend on the Carvair at the moment" - which could mean anything!
