Very sad. To answer Craig's question. The T18 counterweight is a piece of lead cast onto some square tube and sits ahead of the aileron hinge line. It is designed to prevent flutter. If it came adrift at high speed, flutter may occur which could result in a jammed aileron, or the aileron departing the aircraft.

Thanks Lumpy and Yak2 for the replies to my question. Peter, it's the Gubbermint - they can do what they like! Bloody poor form really.

Email sent to CAA today:Subject: Accident Report 08/1753 Thorp ZK-WMT Good Morning, I have received a copy of this report, which is of interest to me as I knew the pilot Wayne Matthews. The report does make interesting reading. In particular the photograph of the aircraft featured on the first page appears to have a remarkable similarity to a photograph of this aircraft taken by me at Raglan airfield just a few days before the crash. I placed a copy of this photograph on the internet some considerable time ago at www.airport-data.com/aircraft/photo/176296.htmlYou will note that this photograph does feature a notification that it is copyright to me, Peter Lewis, as the originator of this image. I do not seem to have received any request from your office or staff regarding the use of this photograph in any official report or document with or without the removal of the copyright information. I would appreciate any comments you may make regarding this situation. Sincerely, Peter Lewis

I have received a response. Matters are now under negotiation.
All I need now is hairy to read his PMs sometime since April!

All sorted now by a contrite CAA. The report has been amended.
They have promised to behave better in the future.
