I had never heard of that. What a strange and oppressive concept to ban a man from having a beer in his own home.

It was a ban on selling, not drinking!

Hell, I can remember the Mandalay - many a Saturday night there, either with a girl or trying to pick one up. Also recall a club in Dominion Rd, that was originally a movie theatre. That sounds like The Crystal Palace. Used to frequent there plus the Oriental, Surfside and on occasions the Orange

This photo from the F. Douglas Mills collection held at Auckland Library has just been posted on Timespanner (on Facebook). So cool!

Looks like the long gone Pirate Shippe at Milford. Built 1928/29, demolished 1957.

My Great Aunts had a bach in Commodore parry Road, Milford, so every summer, all us kids used to pend 4 weeks at Milford. I just remember the Pirate Ship - it was great to a kid. The saltwater swimming pool was filled in back in the 80's I think - a pity - great place for catching Parores.
More like the early 90's, I lived just up the road when I was a kid, the pool closed down in 1957 same time as the Pirate Ship. The pool then lay stagnant for a very long time. I always thought the pool should have been rebuilt, it's still there under the grass.

Sly grogging was big business right throughout the dry suburbs and of course Flora Mc Kenzie in Ring Terrace was very famous. There are certainly plenty of stories still around.
I can confirm one of the Florea McKenzie stories, Colin Gilltraps wife was one of her girls.

There were dry suburbs (electorates?) all over, as well as trust-only ones. I was brought up in Western Springs (just a couple of hundered metres from MOTAT) and Pt Chev and Grey Lynn were dry, nearest pub was in Karangahape Rd near the Ponsonby Road intersection it waas called the Naval and Family, next nearest was the Rising Sun on corner of K Rd and Hobson St.
