Amazing thread this one.
I have not seen many photos of the RNZAF DC6 aircraft. However as a teenager at Hobsonville in the mid 60's I recall seeing a few obviously 40SQN on my way to the movies at Whenuapai or from my push bike. My father Harry Howard, mother and brother flew in one to a posting to 41SQN at Changi, I was at RAAF Wagga at the time, just left school, I met up with them in Melbourne on 10th July 1967. My father gave me one of the first Decimal Coins, newly introduced that day. A long time after, he told me that the DC6 was refuelled at Derby at an almost deserted airfield by hand from 44 gallon drums. While the passengers, wives and children was sitting in a tin shed at the side of the airfield. Apparently the flight crew were keen on getting obscure airfields in there flight log books? Long story, but that could be the one on page 12 of this thread.
"" DC-6 EL-WNH ex NZ3632 looking worse than when I last photographed her ...now no longer on her undercarriage.. Pic taken 11 July at Lanseria (FALA) ""
As with the rest of this forum, Incredible Photos and information
Thanks Bob Howard

Love it, Bearcat. Haven't seen that many Chippies in formation for ages. Thanks, I think this 6 ship formation is a record for Chippies in SA. The SA Air Force never used them, so the 25 odd that are in SA are all ex RAF / British Army examples. The 22 May 2011 was the 65th anniversary of the Chipmunk and the intention was to put up a formo on that day but due to various factors, it had to be delayed by a week. There is certainly local momentum to put up an even larger formo ...just hope I can be there to record it

There was a formation of 8 Chipmunks at an Omaka Classic Fighters airshow in 2007, that was pretty neat.
