Pictured below, at Timaru, Bell Jetranger III, ZK-HSL, sporting a custom paint scheme. Ths would be around 1984-85. The machine belonged to Sid Lane of Lanes Apparel, hence the personal registration. It was fitted out with plush interior, and had a host of optional extras.    |

I remember he had a longranger, painted up as well, any photos of that about.

The fuselage of HSL, still in this scheme, was in one of WAW's hangars here at Wanganui until very, very recently. Sadly, I believe it was scrapped  . |

The Bell 206L-1 LongRanger was ZK-HTL, seen here at Ardmore 18Jul1982  The gold/silver graphics do not show up well on a black fuselage in a black-and -white photograph! Zombie thread, but for a good reason: "Star Wars" lives! The Force is indeed strong with this JetRanger as the fuselage still exists (link). My earlier report of its demise was, pleasantly, exaggerated. Dad used to crew ZK-HTM and pilot Charlie Anderson would take him and my Mum along to events like airshows where WAW would sell rides with it. She recalls both HTM and HSL were doing joyrides at an airshow - possibly the RNZAF 50th at Ohakea? - Charlie was rather disappointed everyone wanted to fly in "the Star Wars helicopter" instead of his one. "They look the same inside," is I think what he said...with a bit of a grumble! |

Didn't Sid Lane also own Hughes 500D ZK-HYY? Black and red, from memory, with a four blade tail rotor

The sci fi scene is more reminiscent of Tony Roberts or Chris Foss's work than Ralph McQuarrie's (the concept artist for Star Wars). Pity it's not in colour.

The spacecraft on the left hand side with twin engine pods is definitely based on Bob Layzell's 'Avery-Frost Orion' Terran Cruiser for Stewart Cowley’s 'Spacecraft 2000 to 2100 AD - A Terran Trade Authority Handbook' which came out in 1978. The Avery-Frost Orion was originally built as racer then, due to it's success, the design went into series production as a private cruiser for up to 6 passengers. If you want to go full geek (like me) see page 66/67 of this pdf version of the book for the full details of this ship.  (I wish I still had that book....) |
